Description

As the story goes, the story of O.L. of Folgoet started in the 15th century but she was finally crowned by the church in a bascilica in Brittany in the late 1880s. A gentleman named Salaun lived in the town & was thought of as a simpleton because he could only say two words: Ave Maria. When he died under a tree he was buried on the spot, & from the grave grew a beautiful lily that had Ave Maria inscribed on the petals. Hence, Our Lady of Folgoet or "Our Lady of the Madman of the Woods". Unusual piece, to say the least. COLOR: aluminum MEASUREMENTS: app 1-1/4" with loop CONDITION: vintage/excellent ONE MEDAL Old aluminum medals? Not cheap & new? Indeed! Due to the complexities of refining aluminum from ore, aluminum was considered more valuable than gold or silver through most of the 1800s. in the early 1900s the refinement was simplified, & aluminum became an inexpensive material. in the religious world, this meant that small devotionals were obtainable by anyone, even if they could not afford precious metals. Most of the aluminum pieces we offer for sale are extremely vintage, even antique. Some bear the original foundry markings, & most have come from Europe. Aluminum is lovely for its durability & ability to hold intricate detail. Being lightweight & shiny is not an indication of compromised quality, but rather an early alternative to heavier more costly metals.
