Antique Inodnesian Style Javanese Majapahit Standing Bronze Vishnu Statue - Protector & Preserver - 44cm/18" Measurements - Height 44cm/18" An antique Java Style standing bronze Vishnu sculpture in the 13th century Majapahit style. Vishnu is both world protector & preserver, restorer of moral order - he is all-powerful & all-pervasive by nature. The Vishnu is stood samabhanga on a simple pedestal which, is itself, stood upon a loose mounted wooden mount. The lowered right hand makes the boon bestowing gesture (varada mudra). He holds his hands in the wish-fulfilling mudra: his right hand facing down & the palm outward & his left in the Teaching mudra. His left hand raised in front of his chest in the dharmachakra mudra. in sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. It denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. in this mudra the thumb & index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method & wisdom. This symbolises generosity. He wears a richly bejewelled dohti & upavita. His face has a downcast gaze. Upon his head he wears a decorative Javanese style tiara in front of his Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises control over Positive & Negative attitudes. He has an aquiline nose & elongated earlobes with large ear rings. The sculpture has a wonderful azurite & malachite patina. Provenance: Ex- private Singapore collection.
