Despite its Spanish origins, it does not have the traditional square design of the streets surrounding the central square.Officially founded on September 29, 1578 under the name of Real de Minas de San Miguel de Tegucigalpa, it was not until 3 centuries later, on October 30, 1880, that it became the capital of the country.
