Description

"Moderate-growing, clumping evergreen perennial to 2 ft. to 4 ft. Tall x 4 ft. to 6 ft. W. With a delicate and airy appearance, it's easier to understand why this species was given the common name ""Asparagus Fern"", though it's not an actual fern at all. Rather it's a durable, tuberous perennial exhibiting gracefully-arching, prickly green stems clad with tiny, deep-green, needle-like foliage. Newer foliage emerges bright-green to create an attractive contrast. While primarily favored for its foliage appearance, the bright-red berries that follow its inconspicuous, pinkish-white, Summer flowers create additional appeal for this popular landscape favorite. These berries contain seeds that germinate easily in moist soil which should be considered when choosing a planting location as this species can be invasive. This tough and versatile plant is great for providing a texture contrast to broadleaf shrubs and perennials and makes a superb hanging basket specimen. Tolerates a variety of soil types (provided they're well-drained) and while this species can survive with little water once established, a more robust appearance is achieved with regular watering. Removing older foliage in early-Spring will help promote a re-flush of lush new growth. Thrives in a Sun to partial shade exposure. Too much shade will likely produce weaker, yellowish-colored foliage. It should be noted that the berries and stem sap of this species is toxic."
