Original American hand-colored woodblock engraving from the mid-19th-century newspaper publication "Harper's Weekly". The illustrated paper, which pictured news and events of the time, was extremely popular (especially among those who could not read). Special artist-correspondents were present at the event to accurately sketch the scene as it was making history. The sketches were rushed to the East Coast publishers whereby skilled artisans engraved them on wood blocks. Within a week after the event, the printed illustrated newspaper was in the public's hands. Today they a revalued to collectors as historically accurate records and as exquisitely engraved works of art.
