Description

Produced and published by the August Gast Banknote and Lithograph Company, this aesthetically minimal depiction of Wharton County, Texas, shows the property ownership and metes and bounds for the county as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century. The company was founded by master lithographer Leopold Gast; their legacy endures to this day, still creating some of the most historic works sought out among cartographic collectors. Wharton County is located to the southwest of Houston and remains driven by a predominantly agricultural economy. Divided nearly in half by the Colorado River, most early settlers established homesteads on the banks which allowed access to ample building materials and water transportation. Corn, sugar cane, and cotton were the primary export from Wharton County during the nineteenth century, and settlements on the areas open prairie by Western European immigrants became one of the trademarks for the region. Wharton County was officially established in 1846, following the conclusion of the Mexican War and Texas achieving statehood. Gast's crisp lines, attention to detail, and subtle flourishes make this work immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This cadastral map allows historians and geologists to develop a scope for a region's land ownership, metes and bounds, population evolution, and how regions transform through decades and centuries. Wharton county's population would nearly triple from 1870 to 1900 as vast numbers of Swedes, Germans, and Czechs settled in the region eager to establish small farms and communities. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper.
