Produced by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the nineteenth century, this birds-eye perspective of Tulsa shows the city in a period of rapid transformation as advances in technology, including aviation and automobiles, were shaping American culture for the coming decades. T.M. Fowler was a pioneering artist of the form, which was widely popular from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1920s when aerial photography made panoramic maps pieces of history. These depictions bear a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The discovery of vast oil reserves in 1901 spurred a period of great prosperity for Tulsa that would last for much of the twentieth century. The city became known for its distinctive art deco architecture and came to be known as the Birthplace of Route 66. The early parts of the twentieth century saw a significant population growth sparked by the oil economy, and many neighborhoods were established that exist to this day. Fowler’s illustration style incorporates extensive detail and features prominent civic buildings which capture the moment in history and examine how towns and cities across America evolved after the turn of the nineteenth century.The first western settlements in Tulsa began in the 1820s, and its geographical location on the Arkansas River made it a prime territory as Europeans began establishing communities across the American south.
