Description

Produced and published by the imprint Bailey & Moyer, this stunning depiction of Reading, Pennsylvania, shows the city in a period of significant growth and transformation as the nation approached the turn of the twentieth century. Located on the banks of the Schuylkill River, the city was enjoying a period of significant prosperity during the late nineteenth century as a thriving coal mining industry attracted immigrants from across Western and Eastern Europe as well as the American South. As the halfway point between Philadelphia and the state capital of Harrisburg, Reading bears a rich history since the earliest colonial days and the establishment of new towns and villages. By the late nineteenth century, it had become a vital transportation route connecting Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. The region maintained thriving economies and, during the American Revolution, produced more iron than the entire English output. Bailey produced numerous birds-eye perspectives of towns and cities across the Northeast during a career that spanned more than five decades. Panoramic maps were widely popular from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1920s, when technological advances in aviation made aerial photography possible. Birdseye perspectives bear a distinctive style and signature aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.Reading was an industrial leader at the time of this publication as the nation experienced considerable prosperity during the so-called Gilded Age. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures a distinct moment in the iconic city’s history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. This vintage map print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery. Overall Size: 24" H x 36" W x 0.01" D
