The Taunton Iron Works would operate for two hundred years until finally closing in 1876. Known for producing fine silver products, Taunton came to be known as the Silver City. Taunton was also home to several other textile mills and industrial factories, which attracted immigrants from other New England towns as well as Western Europe and Ireland who established communities and neighborhoods, many of which endure to this day.
