Description
Only two years old when the atomic bomb fell on her city of Hiroshima, Sadako died ten years later of leukemia caused by radiation poisoning. From a series of letters collected by her classmates, the author creates a portrait of a spirited girl who never lost her faith and determination as she battled a devastating illness. Believing in the ancient tradition that a thousand paper cranes will restore good health, Sadako managed to make 644 cranes before her life came to a peaceful end. Today, Japanese children still place thousands of paper cranes beneath her memorial in the Hiroshima Peace Park.
