Description

When Dionysus comes to Thebes, all but young Penthus feel his worship harmless. Infuriated, Dionysus hypnotizes Penthus and sends him among the revelers, where he is killed. Penthus's mother, in a Dionysian-induced frenzy, believes a lion has been killed and proudly carries its head home. Only when she recovers does she realize it is the severed head of her son.
