Sonny, a young grizzly bear, wakes from a terrible nightmare about the Red Monster Fish. When he was very young, his mother tells him, Sonny fell in the river where the fat red salmon were traveling. By learning to catch and eat the fish, she tells him, Sonny can overcome his fear. From his mother, he learns about the world, its sights, sounds, smells, and tastes -- and finally, the fear and joy of being on his own in the wilderness.
