Description

Pedro Arrupe (1907-1991), a Basque Jesuit, was the superior general of the Society of Jesus from 1965 until his death. In the twenty-six years of his service he oversaw a renewal of the Jesuits so profound that he is revered by many in the Society as a second founder.” It was Arrupe who was instrumental in promoting a new identity for the Jesuits in terms of faith that does justice.” As such, he was a key figure in moving the Jesuits in the direction of an option for the poor. The readings here, beginning with his shattering eye-witness account of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, reveal a profound faith, deep compassion for a suffering world, and an almost mystical devotion to the figure of Jesus.
