Description

Petrified wood consists of fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits its minerals in the plant`s cells, and as the plant`s lignin and cellulose decay away, a stone mold forms in its place. Petrified wood from Indonesia is from ancient teak (hardwood) trees that are approximately 20 million years old. Minerals present in the mud and water prior to and during the petrification process give it its color. These wonderful Indonesian petrified wood bookends are carved from the same fossilized trunk, so the color matches perfectly. These bookends have a very dark inner core, ranging from black to dark gray, due to carbon and manganese oxide deposits. While they match in color, each bookend is unique, and they may be different sized due to the natural petrification process. They range from 6 to 8 inches in height, are about 3 1/2 to 4 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches thick. Each bookend weighs between 3 and 4 pounds. NOTE: Because these are naturally made and are unique, yours may not look exactly like the ones in the photographs shown. Zeckos
