Description

Baskets of Cambodia were started in 1996 employing makers from different villages. Each village owns a skill for a certain weaving style that represents their identity. From those weaving styles evolved designs that we've been making for over 20 years using traditional hand skills with minimal tools. The process starts out with a water bath inside a live size ceramic vessel to soak the grass. When the grass is soft, then the shaving process starts with a fruit knife until the desired thickness is achieved. The tools used in constructing our baskets are the maker's bare hands for foraging as well as fruit knives to shave down the grass to thin thread size. Each person can make 3-5 small baskets a day based on the difficulty level of the basket design that may require a combination of patterns like the single interlocking weave, triple weave, webbing, or spiral weave.
