Though her parents gave her in marriage to Valerian of Trastevere, Cecilia kept a lifelong vow of chastity to God, her true spouse. It is said that she converted her husband to Christianity and that they both were martyred for their faith. Pre-Raphaelite artist Waterhouse painted the patroness of music in a superbly-colored medieval scene of realism that portrays her ecstasy of faith.
