They believe that by keeping their faces hidden during the marriage ceremony they are protected from the evil eye possibly cast by any of those attending. Ibrahim grounds stones and charcoal to obtain the colors used for decorating the sese wood mask. This mask is known as 'Sowei,' which in the Gola language of the Mandey means 'Give Birth.'
