Description

I have been working as woodcarver since 2002. I saw how the men in my community carved wood and I'd stop by their workshops to see how they worked. I knew I wanted to learn this skill. Learning how to design wasn't easy, but mastering this art wasn't very difficult for me. I knew I wanted to put all of my energy into it and practiced a lot after each lesson. I still don't have my own workshop, but a good friend of mine gave me the chance to use his instead. My materials are wood, paint, recycled glass beads, aluminum and brass. Before beginning a mask or sculpture, I sit and think of what design will best fit a piece of wood. I use my imagination and the images from my surroundings. My favorite part is the finishing because I love applying my creativity. A difficult moment for me was when my parents separated and my father left for Kumasi. We had very little support from our extended family. During this time, I began learning how to carve wood. One day, I hope to become a great artist and show the world my abilities and also help young artisans.
