Following a stellar collegiate career at Syracuse, Brown would be drafted sixth overall by the Browns in the 1957 NFL Draft. He would go on to become the first rookie in NFL history to win MVP, a record that still stands as of 2023. The following year, he became the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards. He finished the 1958 season with 1,527 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. During 1964, he helped lead the Browns to an NFC Championship title over the Johnny Unitas-led Baltimore Colts. In 1965, Brown's ninth and final season, he won his third NFL MVP after posting 1,544 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns from scrimmage. At the time of his retirement, he was the NFL's all-time leader in rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
