Description
20" X 24" Pensive by John Everett Millais was painted after he had moved away from the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This was more inspired by Georgian Golden Age which was common for Victorian-era art. Millais working in alla prima (quick with wet glazes without sketching out the canvas first). This technique captured each brushstroke. The young girl looks almost like a life-like porcelain doll. During this period it was uncommon for artists to commit to giving child subjects a sense of inner life. The original was painted in 1893 and is part of a private collection after it sold at Christie's in 2015 for 662,500 USD.
