Description

Appenzeller Spitzhauben Chickens are rare, medium-sized chickens that originated in Switzerland around the 1500's from the monasteries of Appenzell. The crests of feathers on their heads closely resemble the headdresses ladies used to wear in Switzerland. Interestingly, Spitzhauben is German for pointed hoods so it's only natural that these birds would be called Appenzeller Spitzhauben. Their black and white speckled plumage, forward thrusting crest with a V-Shaped comb and full fanning tail make them an interesting and unique addition to your flock. These Appenzeller Spitzhauben Chickens are excellent climbers and flyers and love to roost in trees. They do well in larger coops with ample run space and are very much free-range birds. These Appenzeller Spitzhauben hens are good medium to large white egg layers beginning to lay around 6 months of age.
