Welsummers are a Dutch breed considered one of the top free range foragers of all laying breeds but they can also be kept in runs quite happily. Hens lay lovely large terra-cotta brown eggs, often with speckles. Very friendly and easy to handle, hens do go broody, often in late Spring but are not particularly good mothers. Egg production does decrease in the winter months with Welsummers but they are hardy in cold weather. They are productive for 3 years and can live up to 9 years.
