Located on the southern shores of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, is home to a bustling port that was central to the region's development throughout the nineteenth century. The completion of the Northern Pacific Railway and its terminus in Tacoma earned the city the nickname "Where Rail Meets Sail" and allowed the region to open up to residential growth as well as importing and exporting industries that spurred further growth.
