Description

Published only a decade following the conclusion go the American Revolution, this unique piece of cartographical history was produced by one of Germany’s finest mapmakers of the time, Franz Ludwig Güssefeld. European curiosity with the new nation sparked a wave of map productions throughout France and Germany. Güssefeld’s work is renowned for his accuracy, attention to detail, and use of perspective. These depictions were often produced to promote immigration to the United States. As these immigrants flocked to the young nation, many established communities were based along cultural lines, which exist to this day, and were promoted on this map, suggesting where friendly German communities were located throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris in 1784, officially ending the American Revolution. The Ordinance of 1784 established the geopolitical holding of the fledgling nation, which stretched to the Mississippi River in the West. The Nation’s Capital was located in Trenton, New Jersey, at this time but would be relocated to New York City in the following year. Trenton was the Capital for less than two months. After nearly a decade of conflict, the United States began rapidly forming its governing bodies and establishing state boundaries. While Spain and France held control of land west of the Mississippi River, the concept of Manifest Destiny was already gaining popularity, and eager settlers were starting to embark west in search of available land. The distinctive aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time and links the past and present. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper.
