The third most populous county in the United States was founded in 1846 at the White Oak and Buffalo Bayous junction. The first European settlers arrived in Galveston Bay in 1822 though there is evidence of human settlement in the region as far back as four thousand BC. These immigrants sailed in from Louisiana and established numerous settlements on the banks of bayous throughout what would become Houston. Senator Harris had been granted more than four thousand acres of land on the Buffalo Bayou and established a trading post and grist mill.Produced by Commissioner of the General Land Office WC Walsh, whose influence on the establishment of numerous institutions, including the University of Texas at Austin, would shape the culture and history of Texas for decades.
