Description

This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, features a prominent landmark and popular attraction at Capitol Reef National Park known as The Castle. This craggy sandstone formation, pictured in the center of the photo, is one of many beautiful structures that define the Park’s 243,921 acres and its unmatched geological diversity. A unique characteristic of this region is the nearly 100-mile-long warp in Earth’s crust known as the Waterpocket Fold, a classic monocline. The fold formed over 40 million years ago when a major geologic event reactivated an ancient buried fault, creating one very steep side in an area of otherwise nearly horizontal layers.
