About The Artwork

"Gold City Diner" - Photo taken in Greenwich Village, New York, NY. “Gold City Diner” is part of my larger series of photographs: “Life Beneath Other Stars.” Like a sort of waking fever dream, “Life Beneath Under Stars” is my vision of this world exactly as it is here and now, except: in some other time... in some other space... under the light of some other type of star. A sort of hyper-realistic surrealism (forgive the oxymoron); if we can envision it, then somewhere it exists. I want you to see how a simple manipulation of light and color can change our perspective; and where we change our perspective we can turn fear into love, darkness into light, and “ugliness” into a thing of beauty. Perhaps, under the light of some other star - or in some other universe - our ugly, mundane brown buildings dappled with pale light can exist as a riot of color against a backdrop of lemonade skies. Sometimes if we get playful with the light it can open our eyes to unseen details; to the beauty in what we, in the darkness, were only capable of perceiving as flaws. The camera is like my paintbrush. I (rather painstakingly) manipulate the light and color in my photographs after the image has been captured. No physical elements of the image are ever added or taken away (except for compositional cropping), nor are any filters ever used. This can create beautiful layers of pixelated sky; showcase the triviality of skin color and the oneness of humanity; and reveal auras of light around buildings and objects, and unexpected contrasts. Enjoy your new view. * This is the 3rd print in a Limited Edition artist’s printing of 10. *Printed on Epson Metallic Photo Gloss to heighten the "silver" effect and add a metallic sheen. * Photograph is signed and numbered on the bottom left and comes with a certificate of authenticity. * Ships flat in a sturdy box.
