Scary bomb sounds, sleeping under a table and watching London burn from afar, Joy meets and marries American soldier Carl and leaves Britain with a two-year old son at the age of 22 and has very little connection with her homeland for decades. After their troop ship postwar journey from Southampton, England to New York and train trip across the US, the couple arrive in Salem with $10 to begin their life in America.

About the Author

In 1925, Joy Beaver was born in England and raised during WWII. She and her two younger brothers lived through the Blitz, Battle of Britain and other rough times including the death of her father when she was 16.

In 1945, she met and married American Army Soldier Carl Stewart Beebe and, as an English war bride, came to America with her husband and two year old son.

In 1948, she immigrated to America. Her life included a career in ownership and management of two restaurant-banquet halls. Her community volunteerism included initiatives at the State Capitol, Governors Mansion, and catering opening nights at the local theatre and local parades. Her family of four children evolved to four grand children and seven great granddaughters.

As of 2012, Joy hosts Salems Accent Club, a 60 year old War Bride group, manages house on 1/2 acre (lived there for 55 years), organizes dinner parties and coordinates social events, attends two college-level classes (writing and French), instructs reading for kindergarten class in Keizer, makes presentations to high school students about war times and immigration hardships, travels the world every year (Europe and Russia in 2012), and enjoys (never losing) the art of sending cards via post mail, daily.
