While Komboloi Beads don't serve a religious function in modern Greece, their ancient origins do begin in the monasteries of Mount Athos of Northern Greece. The Monks would create knots on a thick beaded string & use this while reciting prayers. The word Kombologia (plural of Komboloi) is a combination of the word Kombos + Logia, which translates to Knots & Words.
