Description

An unusual type of tourmaline which is deposited as aggregates of thin radiating crystals in botryoidal or stalactitic habit. They generally show a strange hackly exterior surface with a rich satiny lustre, hence the name "velvet tourmaline". They come from a small find made around 2000 or so by the late Dan Belsher (who owned Blue Sky Minerals). Since he sadly died in 2003 without divulging the precise location of the find, no further material has beeen found, so they remain a rather rare oddity. This particular specimen is a piece from a larger stalactitic mass. The exterior is visible on one corner. Interestingly whilst they were originally thought to be black tourmaline (and sold as such), it is thought that this material is more likely to be Dravite. However to my knowledge no-one has actually tested any to be sure, despite the find being made 20 years ago. Whichever they prove to be , they are certainly unusual, interesting & now rare. It comes from the "Blue Sky Prospect", Santa Cruz area, Sonora, Mexico It measures 34x5x12mm & weighs 18.8g ORDERING INFORMATION: Shipping: All orders are posted by the equivalent of Priority Mail with a tracking number & are dispatched in 3 working days or less.
