Two years later Rhode Island became the last of the Thirteen states to join the union. Federal Hill's Atwells Avenue was named for Amos Maine Atwell who led a syndicate of businessmen developing the western areas of Providence in 1788. Initially Federal Hill was populated by mostly Irish & Italian immigrants & during the beginning of the 20th century mostly Italian immigrants, so it became known as little Italy. in 1954 the Patriarca crime family moved their base of operations from Boston to Federal Hill until 1984.
