Description
Antique Home of Ramona Crate Label, Helen Hunt Jackson, Rancho Camulos, Ventura County, California, 1900s - 1924 11" x 10" ~ little to no wear The Ramona Crate Label is not just famous, it's unique & collectible. Its history & significance make it a must-have for any collector. This fantastic American company, the Rancho Camulos, holds a significant place in history. It was the first orange grower in Ventura County, CA, after getting their first seeds from a family friend in 1857. This is also, more importantly, & significant, the ranch that "Ramona" by Helen Hunt Jackson published in 1884 & her experiences here. This caused this place to become so famous, & it was flooded with tourists & visitors first by stagecoach & then by railroad. The Southern Pacific Railroad opened a depot & advertised that they had access to the ranch to separate themselves from their competitors, so the problem became something the family eventually learned to take advantage of. They had spent a lot of money over many years in Californian hospitality, housing the visitors at the ranch who often stole things & ate the fruit in the orchards. They branded their wine & oranges as Home of Ramona to capitalize on the popularity of the book, which inspired & was adapted by many other books & plays. The enduring legacy of the Ramona Crate Label is a testament to its unique place in history. This label, from a place that still exists & produces oranges, was reopened in 1994 after being sold by the original family in 1924. The ranch, established in 1839, was one of the largest wine producers in the area. Today, the Ranch is a National Historic Landmark, & one of the original Spanish adobe buildings still stands; it is one of the only ones in the state. It is a museum & a large tourist attraction now.
