SAINT THERESE OF LISIEUx ca. 1873-1897 Feast Day Oct 1 Patron of The Missions Daughter to a lacemaker & a watchmaker who had intended to be celibate, this sensitive child grew into a woman of character & depth. Her mother died when she was only 4 & she was lost for some time. She followed her sisters into the Carmelite monastery. She aspired to be someone who could make a difference in the world, but found herself feeling powerless in the small nunnery. One day, she was overcome with the thought that at the root of all things great & large is the seed of love & she would make Love her vocation. Known as "The Little Flowers," she believed she was just a lowly flower on the carpet of the forest floor, but that God's love shines on all with equal warmth. Theresa's story reminds us all that through love & humility we can achieve great things in even the smallest of lives. They grew out of the Spanish settlers need for utilitarian & decorative items in the rustic landscape. The limited materials & resources of the desert guided the art forms. One of the many art forms is traditional retablo paintings, images of the Catholic Saints painted on wooden boards using a hand-made gesso & locally sourced pigments. I am an award-winning 5th generation Spanish Colonial artist & juried member of the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in the retablo category. I show annually at the prestigious Traditional Spanish Market in Santa Fe, NM. My artwork has been featured on internationally distributed beer labels (Cerveza de los Muertos), nationally distributed wine labels (La Catrina Vino) & nationally awarded New Mexico Lottery Scratchers. I aspire to spread humanity by educating on cultural imagery & history through art & teaching. Please let me know if you need expedited shipping. I can usually accommodate that.
