Description

Dodes'ka-den-A Rare Original Vintage Italian Movie Poster of Akira Kurosawa's colorful collage of residents in a Tokyo slum with Kin Sugai, Hisashi Igawa, & Jitsuko Yoshimura. One of the most personal works of his entire career, Dodes'ka-den is a vibrant, colorful, & lyrical pastiche of some of the most unusual & compelling characters to ever inhabit a "Kurosawa Film". Kurosawa released this movie to jump-start an independent production partnership between four of the most successful Japanese film directors of his era (the other three being Masaki Kobayashi, Kon Ichikawa, & Keisuke Kinoshita). The partnership was counting on the popular director to make a blockbuster to help finance films for each of the others but unfortunately, this sensitive, personal & abstract work never found its audience...on its first release. There's charm, pathos, humor, & sadness in this absorbing work which seems to take place in an almost post-apocalyptic setting of an unknown time & place. There's Rokkuchan, a challenged man-child who plays conductor on an imaginary train making the noises of locomotion...the 'clickety-clack' of the title. Then there's the Father & son scrounging for restaurant scraps waxing poetic with elaborate descriptions of a future dream house. Watch the sensitive sake salesman who delivers on a bike & has a sweet yet mysterious connection with a shy & quiet woman. Rounding out the community is a group of ladies who squat around the public spigot filling their vessels & gossiping about everyone & no one in particular. Kurosawa allows the actors room to improvise even as his camera movement remains deeply structured veering from wide compositions & claustrophobic shots to painterly visions of faces evoking the essence of a silent film. Dodes'ka-den is his first color film & lush primaries light up every frame sometimes spilling over the seams like one of his now-famous oil paintings. Keep an eye out for the director himself in a cameo as a painter in the street.
