The Westwood Children, Joshua Johnson Biracial, Joshua Johnson is considered the first person of color to make his living as a painter in the United States. He died in 1824 & is known for his paintings of prominent residents of Maryland. The Westwood Children shows the male children of John & Margaret Westwood. He was a successful stagecoach manufacturer in Baltimore. The artist received his freedom in 1782 & started advertising as a portrait painter. He moved often, often residing near where chair-makers lived. His last-known area of resident was Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Essentially a self-taught artist, he traveled to many of the major Eastern cities to improve his skills, returning to Missouri to paint scenes of life along the frontier. Boatmen on the Missouri depicts a common scene of the 1800s. The painting presents an idealized view of life at the time.
