Description

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Three cheers for the inspired art teacher in this charming story. When readers meet Vashti, she is staring at a blank piece of paper. A polar bear in a snow storm? asks her teacher. When the girl explains that she doesn't know what to draw, her instructor asks her to make a simple mark on the page. She peevishly complies by sinking her pencil into the paper, leaving a small dot. The teacher then asks her to sign her work. When next Vashti enters her art class, she sees her paper on display in a golden frame hanging over her teacher's desk. Vashti goes on a quest to stretch her skills in an effort to make a better dot. She gets so carried away with her efforts that she soon has enough artwork (consisting of different dots in various styles, colors, and sizes) to mount a one-person exhibit. It's clear that by the end of the story Vashti has learned her lesson—she challenges a small admirer to sign his own first efforts. Reynold's simple pen-and-ink sketches are washed in places by watercolor swirls that express emotions. An excellent selection for any library or bookstore.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.—María Otero-Boisvert, Críticas
