Description

Produced by prominent Philadelphia engravers and publishers Worley & Bracher, this cadastral map depicts land ownership, with the major towns of Trenton, Humboldt, Rutherford, and more featured as insets. Gibson County in western Tennessee has remained largely agrarian and is home to the longest continuously held fair in the South. The Gibson County Fair has been held every year since 1869 and attracts visitors from around the region. The Tennessee General Assembly founded Gibson County in 1823 after the land was ceded to the United States from the Chickasaws. The County was named after Colonel John Gibson, who served under Andrew Jackson in the Natchez Wars. One of the region's original settlers was Davy Crockett, who established a cabin in the early part of the 1820s. The fertile soil found in the region has driven the farming economy through the County and is known for its rich diversity of products for numerous agricultural markets. Throughout the nineteenth century, numerous grist, flour, sawmills were established along the waterway throughout the County. By the latter portion of the 1880s, Gibson County had built its first cotton gin and was producing textiles for export to Northeastern and European markets. This depiction's unique style and distinctive aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Cadastral maps served as comprehensive land recordings of the metes-and-bounds of real property ownership and allow historians to track a region's development, evolution, settlement, and population growth. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper.
