We tested these "As Seen on TV" kitchen gadgets and found five actually worth picking up the phone for.

Cut the fat: NuWave Oven

$100; NuWaveOven.com

The spiel: It uses a trio of convection, conduction and infrared heat to cook food fast. Plus, the raised rack makes sure you lose the extra grease.

Our take: The NuWave takes up room on the kitchen counter but is worth it. The oven delivers on its promise to help you make leaner but still delicious meals. “My burger came out juicy even though I watched the fat drip away,” says SELF beauty blogger Alex Samuel. You can also use it to make lighter potato chips and fries. The setup and directions are intuitive, too. “If you can use a microwave, you can master the NuWave,” Samuel says.

The love: "My burger came out juicy even though I watched the fat drip away," says beauty editor Alex Samuel.

Buy it if: You’re watching your weight—but you can’t give up comfort food.

Free up space: Chef Basket

$10; ChefBasket.com

The spiel: With 12 uses (!), such as steaming, straining and boiling, this gizmo does it all. Plus, the handles stay cool.

Our take: “Draining pasta was 100 percent easier,” says associate public relations director Lindsey Benoit. “I didn’t burn my fingers or have to deal with an annoying steam facial.” Steaming veggies is also simpler with the basket, which makes healthy cooking a breeze. Another nice feature: The Chef Basket folds up, so it fits in even the smallest kitchen, and it eliminates the need for other gadgets because it has so many uses. Plus, it doesn’t take much time—or effort—to clean.

The love: "Draining pasta was easier," says SELF senior public relations manager Lindsey Benoit. "No annoying steam facial. And the basket folds up, so it fits in my tiny kitchen."

Buy it if: You’re looking to free up space in the kitchen.

The Slap Chop

(Photo: Claire Benoist)

Slash prep time: Slap Chop

$20; SlapChop.com

The spiel: Load ingredients, like nuts, seeds and veggies, and slap 'em to bits.

Our take: The Slap Chop definitely cuts down on prep time. “It got the job done in half the time it takes to use a knife,” says senior market editor Kristen Saladino. “A huge bonus: You can chop onions tear-free!” The product comes apart easily to clean, but putting it back together can be a bit more challenging. “It was a little like a jigsaw puzzle,” Saladino says.

The love: "It got the job done in half the time it takes to use a knife," says senior market editor Kristen Saladino. "A huge bonus: You can chop onions tear-free!"

Buy it if: You need to get dinner on the table fast.

Chocolatiere

Easy desserts: Chocolatiere

$20; Target.com

The spiel: Melt chocolate evenly for baking or for dipping goodies fondue-style.

Our take: “It was a cinch to use,” says freelance designer Carolyn LiRosi. “The chocolate melted in less than 10 minutes.” Cleanup is fast, too. The Chocolatiere is perfect for making effortless, healthy desserts such as berries dunked in dark chocolate.

The love: "Setup and cleanup were a breeze, and the chocolate melted in less than 10 minutes," says freelance designer Carolyn LiRosi. "It's great for going healthy—dark chocolate and berries."

Buy it if: You have a major sweet tooth.

Genius Air Plus

Save cash: Genius Air Plus Refrigerator Refresher & Deodorizer

$25; QVC.com

The spiel: Stash it in the fridge to absorb ethylene, a gas emitted by fruit and veggies that ages them, so produce stays fresh longer.

Our take: “It’s totally easy to use—turn it on and stick it into your fridge,” says associate health editor Anna Maltby. “It keeps herbs and vegetables fresh for longer, and even more pleasantly, it keeps the fridge smelling clean.” Best part: It saves you money because you don’t have to shop for fresh stuff nearly as often.

The love: "I'm saving money because I don't have to shop for fresh stuff nearly as often," says associate health editor Anna Maltby.

Buy it if: You’re looking to save some cash.

First the rain, now the drain. California’s punishing rain this month has flooded neighborhoods and triggered evacuations. It has also pushed Lake Berryessa in Napa County way beyond capacity, pouring water into its bathtub-like drain. It’s the first time that’s happened in 11 years, reports CBS News correspondent Mireya Villarreal. “Back in October, we were essentially half-full,” said Roland Sanford, general manager of the Solano County Water Agency. “This is the first time that the lake has been so low, and filled-up and spilled in one year.” What looks calm at the top of the “Morning Glory Spillway” looks like a raging torrent at the bottom. The spillway is located 200 feet from the Monticello

Pro tip: If you're going to text your bro about going to a girl's dorm to hook up, triple check to make sure you're not sending that text to the girl you think you're hooking up with instead. Chances are, that hook up will be null and void.
