Best bacon taste test

Chocolate-covered bacon, bacon martinis, bacon ice cream, bacon-of-the-month clubs—Is there any doubt that bacon is beloved? Unfortunately, there’s also no doubt that bacon is not health food. Just two slices of pork bacon can have about 80 calories, 7 grams of fat (about a third saturated), and 200 to 400 milligrams of sodium. Eat turkey bacon and you can cut those numbers in half, but you’ll cut taste too, our tests showed. We tested regular and thick-sliced uncooked bacon, precooked bacon, and turkey bacon.

MORE AT COnsumer Reports

Kirkland Signature was the only excellent product. It crisped up nicely and consistently had balanced fat and meat flavors complemented by wood smoke and a hint of sweetness. The other pork bacons were close in quality and very good overall. Niman Ranch, Trader Joe’s, Wright, and the two precooked bacons were smokier than some others; the two Hormel Black Labels were a bit sour.

The turkey bacons, cheaper but lower rated than the rest, were uniform slices of seemingly re-formed meat. They tasted low in fat, with a flavor of liquid smoke.

Bottom line. Enjoy bacon occasionally. Kirkland Signature Regular tastes best. It’s sold as four 1-pound packages, so you may need to freeze some. (In general, you can keep opened bacon in a refrigerator for up to a week.)

Very good alternatives include Great Value Lower Sodium or, for thicker slices, Oscar Mayer Thick Cut. A higher price didn’t mean better bacon: The priciest product of all, Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked, rated lower than many others.

Heating bacon in a microwave oven is quick and convenient; pan-frying gives you control over crispness; and broiling or baking lets you cook for a crowd.

Bacon 101

100% real bacon! Huh? That’s a claim on Oscar Mayer Fully Cooked.

Fully cooked. Eaten from the package, in a BLT sandwich for example, it’s not very crisp. You can crisp it by cooking, but that defeats the purpose. The fully cooked pork bacons we tested didn’t taste as good as the others.

Nitrites, nitrates. They help in curing bacon—a preservation, flavoring, and coloring process—but can form nitrosamines, chemicals found to cause cancer in lab animals.

No antibiotics ever. The animal wasn’t fed antibiotics for illness or to promote growth, a practice that can lead to a rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Niman Ranch is the only tested brand claiming to raise pigs without these drugs.

Thick cut. Some bacons boast of thicker slices, and they have a serving size of one slice instead of two. Niman Ranch is thicker than most but doesn’t advertise it.

Uncured. Curing is done with salt, sodium nitrite, sugar, and sometimes other ingredients. Uncured bacon contains no synthetic nitrites or nitrates, but (as with the Trader Joe’s and Niman Ranch bacons) it has them in natural form—from celery powder, for example.

    • Brie Larson, like everyone else, didn't seem thrilled with Casey Affleck's Oscar win

As 2016's Best Actress winner, Brie Larson was tasked with presenting the award for Best Actor at the 2017 Academy Awards. On Sunday night, that award went to Casey Affleck for his role in Manchester By the Sea , despite the allegations of sexual harassment against him. And like the rest of the internet, Larson did not seem pleased. My aesthetic: Brie Larson not clapping for literal trash hole casey affleck pic.twitter.com/Ci5LWXLkCr — Tyler Struble (@tyler_struble) February 27, 2017 The allegations against Affleck stem from lawsuits filed by two women who worked on his 2010 film I'm Still Here. The actor settled both cases out of court.  Although similar allegations against Nate Parker became the major talking point surrounding his film The Birth of a Nation , Affleck's Oscar win shows that the lawsuits have left his his career largely unscathed. Larson — who portrayed a sexual assault survivor in 2015's Room and who stood to hug the survivors who performed with Lady Gaga at last year's show — doesn't seem to be here for it.  All award season Brie Larson, who starred in a movie about sexual assault, had to present Casey Affleck all his awards. pic.twitter.com/L2WbQvSJNv — Marnie (@ChrnclsOfMarnia) February 27, 2017 at what time is brie larson scheduled to beat up casey affleck — ASYA (@communistbabe) February 27, 2017 brie larson everytime she sees casey affleck pic.twitter.com/nkQCta9JxZ — chiara (@chapmns) February 27, 2017 BONUS: Despite the most awkward moment in Oscars history, ‘Moonlight’s’ Best Picture award is what matters most.

    • PROOF that liberal protesters are paid

      Republican lawmakers across the country have grown wary of holding town hall meetings with constituents. What's scaring these brave public servants? Paid protesters. Specifically, paid liberal protesters. (It's a well-known fact that all conservative protesters are volunteer and have legitimate gripes that must be heard.) Most in the FAKE NEWS media will claim there's no such things as a paid liberal protester. They'll say people are simply turning out to express frustration over GOP policies and because they don't want to lose their health care and die. But I'm here to tell you otherwise: Paid liberal protesters totally exist; it's an excellent career choice with surprisingly good benefits;

It is illegal to catch a great white shark and when one is hooked, it is supposed to be released as soon as possible, not landed so photos can be taken, as what happened in this case. Draft season is the smokiest season in the NFL, a time of the year when no one is to believed and any rumor is on the table. This year is even smokier because the two teams at the top, the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, are in full-blown rebuilds without clear-cut options at quarterback.  Anything is on the table, making any rumor totally feasible. Here’s a very interesting option for San Francisco: Reuben Foster of Alabama with the No. 2 overall pick. According to Vic Carruci of the Buffalo News, there is substantial “buzz” about Foster landing in San Francisco at the top of the draft. Asked in a mailbag about the possibility of Foster landing with Buffalo at No. 10 overall, Carucci
