Wedding gifts that stand the test of time

Consumer Reports
Cusinart Crystal SCC-1000 Limited Edition Perfec Temp

The start of the traditional wedding season is here and with it the questions: What to wear and what to buy the newlyweds? The average couple registers for 153 items, according to TheKnot.com, and kitchen gear and small appliances are popular requests.

To help you sort through the choices, Consumer Reports picked some of the top-rated housewares from our tests ranging in price from $60 to $450.

MORE FROM Consumer Reports:

Coffeemakers

Decked out in Swarovski crystals, the Cusinart Crystal SCC-1000 Limited Edition Perfec Temp coffeemaker, $185, can make a statement on any countertop. But the 14-cup drip machine also makes a great cup of coffee. Brewing performance was excellent and it maintained the industry-recommended 195 degrees F for five or six minutes. Setup, operation, and cleanup were a cinch, and we found this model's carafe very easy to handle.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Professional "S"

Kitchen knives

An old adage says it's bad luck to give knives to newlyweds but with grooms often participating in gift selection, more knives are appearing on registries. Our top-rated set is the Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Professional "S", $330. This set of seven knives had excellent cutting performance and the handles are well balanced and comfortable. A bonus is the free lifetime warranty.

KitchenAid K45SSWH Classic Stand Mixer

Stand mixers

The KitchenAid Classic stand mixer, $200, and its brandmate the KitchenAid Artisan, $285, are perennials on wedding registries and we recommend both models. But in our tests, the Breville BEM800XL, $300, bested both KitchenAids with its excellent marks for mixing, whipping and kneading. It doesn't resemble a KitchenAid but its stainless finish has its own sleek appeal.

Cuisinart CPT-420
Toasters

You can spend a lot on a toaster but that doesn't mean it'll make good toast. But the two-slice Cuisinart CPT-420, $80, and the four-slice Cuisinart CPT-440, $92.50, were champs at browning bread evenly in successive batches.

If the couple wants a coordinated countertop, the KitchenAid Pro Line KMT2203CA, $300, which matches the stand mixer, also makes good toast. And for cooking options such as baking and broiling, our top toaster oven is the Breville Smart Oven BOV800XL, $250.

Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004

Blenders

For couples who like to entertain, the Ninja Master Prep Professional QB1004, $60, can churn out some delicious icy drinks and was rated excellent in overall performance. And at that price we named it a CR Best Buy.

It's a good choice if you're giving the couple a check but don't want to arrive empty handed. Of course, you can spend a lot more than that on the cult favorite, the Vitamix 5200, $480. The 11-speed blender is great at preparing smoothies, crushing ice and making puree. And it has an online following of folks who share tips and recipes.

Reliable IronMaven J420
Steam irons

Weddings can also be the time to go off registry and give the couple something they may not have thought of but that would make their life easier. With its excellent steaming rate, the Reliable IronMaven J420 steam ironing system, $299, will save the newlyweds hours of ironing time. And its large water tank allows for less frequent refills. In our tests, the results were wrinkle-free.

Shaklee BestWater MTS2000 82300
Water filters

Another unconventional but useful gift is the Shaklee BestWater MTS2000 82300 countertop water filter, $260. It can save the couple from lugging in crates of bottled water and filters large amounts of water without modifying the plumbing system. And you can give the bride and groom his and hers water bottles.

Russia claims to have created a devastating hypersonic missile that travels five times faster than the speed of sound and could rip through navy warship defences because it's too fast to stop. The Kremlin's Zircon missile has been called "unstoppable", "unbeatable" and "undefendable" with a 4,600mph speed that only one defence system in the world can destroy – that system is owned by Russia. The missile employs revolutionary scramjet technology to reach its hypersonic speeds whereby propulsion is created by forcing air from the atmosphere into its combustor where it mixes with on-board fuel – rather than carry both fuel and oxidizer like traditional rockets.

    • After Trump spent the weekend on his golf course, Fox News sends out an odd 'news alert'

Some critics of President Trump and the news media argue that political commentators have set an unusually low bar for Trump. At 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, the news division of Fox News sent out this "news alert": In fact, Trump spent Saturday and Sunday at his golf course in Sterling, Virginia. His staff said he was in meetings, but social media posts showed he was wearing his golf attire and spending time on the links. "Normally, I'd suggest that everyone cool it with the golf snark," notes Kevin Drum at Mother Jones. "We've now had four consecutive presidents who have taken endless grief every time they hit the links, and it's pretty stupid." But not only was this Trump's 13th trip to one of his

    • The 8 best new features Apple added to your iPhone in iOS 10.3

After releasing roughly 437 different iOS 10.3 betas to developers over the past few weeks alone, Apple has finally released iOS 10.3 to the public. The new mobile software is available as an over the air (OTA) download or as a download through iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC, and it's compatible with 19 different Apple devices dating as far back as the iPhone 5, 4th-generation iPad, iPad mini 2, and the 6th-generation iPod touch. Should you be excited? Should you rush to download and install iOS 10.3 on your iPhone or iPad as soon as possible? In this post, we'll run through all of the top new features Apple introduced in iOS 10.3. Find My AirPods : The most talked-about new feature in iOS 10.3 is Find My AirPods, which obviously only matters if you own a pair of Apple's hot new AirPods. They're still next to impossible to find in Apple stores, so Amazon is really your only hope if you want AirPods anytime soon . There's now a new option in the Find My iPhone app that can track down your AirPods, but it's nowhere near as accurate or as useful as it is for iPhones and iPads since AirPods don't have a GPS radio or the ability to connect to any networks. Instead, this is basically a log that will show you the last location where your iPhone was connected to your AirPods. If you forget your AirPods somewhere, this nifty new feature could definitely help you find them. If you haven't connected to them in a while or if they're stolen, you're pretty much out of luck. App Transition Animations : You might not even notice this one, but Apple made a subtle change to the transition animations that are shown as apps open and close in iOS 10.3. They now have slightly more rounded edges, which is definitely not a big deal. But they also seem to move a bit faster, which is a big deal since it speeds up the interface a bit. Weather in Maps : In the Maps app, users can now 3D Touch the weather icon to see a local forecast for the area. Apple ID Profile : There is now a new Apple ID profile section in the Settings app that you'll see at the very top of the first screen. It gives you access to a single page where you'll find your full contact profile, security settings, payment information, iCloud account details, App Store settings, Family Sharing settings and a bit more. Also of note, this page displays every Apple device where you're currently signed in. iCloud Storage : You'll now find a new section at the top of your iCloud settings page with a breakdown of how your iCloud storage is being used. New File System : This is a big one, though it takes place completely behind the scenes so you won't even realize it's happening. Installing iOS 10.3 will automatically update your iPhone or iPad to use Apple File System (APFS) instead of HFS+. APFS is better optimized for NAND flash storage so files can be accessed more quickly, and it also supports stronger encryption. Voice Call Continuity for Verizon : This is obviously a new feature that will only be appreciated by Verizon Wireless subscribers, but iCloud calling features are now finally supported if you use Verizon. That means you can make or receive voice calls on your Mac, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch. Podcasts Widget : You know that widgets panel you never use? There's a new Podcasts widget available now (it's actually a pretty cool addition for podcast fans).

    • When it wouldn't stop raining, this family did a muddy maternity photoshoot instead (15 photos)

(All photos courtesy of Elaine Baca, Lane B Photograph ) Parenting is messy, but as this family of four show, it can also be plenty of fun. Jon and Brittany Barton were planning a maternity shoot to celebrate their third child, but the weather was proving to be very uncooperative. “In Waxahachie, Texas when it rains it pours. In the weeks leading up to the maternity session, the rain was relentless,” said photographer Elaine Baca of Lane B Photography . “We had rescheduled the session a couple of times already and Brittany was quickly approaching the end of her pregnancy, so we knew he might come any day.” Baca went back and forth with the Bartons discussing outfits and alternative indoor locations but the family were very outdoorsy and knew that simply wasn’t them. “Then I suggested something a little unconventional. They have a huge backyard which backs up to a field and I knew it had lots of muddy puddles, so I asked her what she thought about playing in the rain and ending with a mud fight. I don’t think she even hesitated, she said she trusted my vision and wanted to go for it!” said Baca. So with Declan, 4, and Noah, 2, in tow, the family spent the day getting up to some muddy mischief and the results were amazing! “For me, photo sessions are all about preserving memories and making new ones. With small children it’s about remembering their ever changing personalities and quirks that make them unique,” Baca said. “[This way] parents don’t have to stress about getting their little ones to sit still and look at the camera and kids get to be kids while doing something everyone enjoys.” And the Bartons definitely looked like they enjoyed themselves alright!
