Vanilla Ice Cream Taste Test

Yahoo editors have selected this article as a favorite of 2013. It first ran on Yahoo Shopping on Feb. 1st and was one of the most popular stories of the year.

Epicurious indulged in 13 brands of vanilla ice cream, but only one got rave reviews from the editors.

W hen it comes to vanilla ice cream, you might be tempted to ask whether there's really that much of a difference in taste from one brand to another. But having tried 13 different brands of vanilla, we can positively confirm it: Not all vanilla is created equal.

In search of the best vanilla scoop, we started by excluding French vanilla and vanilla bean varieties in favor of plain old basic vanilla. What did we want from the perfect pint? A natural-looking frozen scoop that can be enjoyed in a bowl, on top of a sugar cone, or à la mode.

The Other Contenders

Most tasters thought SoCo Creamery was icy and tasted fruity, almost pineapple-y. 365 Organic was an unappealing yellow color, very thick and surprisingly bland.

And while we're fans of Blue Marble's other flavors, their brand's vanilla missed the mark: "Tastes like bad vanilla frosting," said one judge. "Needs a serious dosage of hot fudge," suggested another.

A teenage driver was streaming to Facebook Live while she drove along a Pennsylvania highway just before a tractor-trailer rear ended her vehicle after midnight Tuesday, killing her and a passenger in a fiery wreck. Brooke Miranda Hughes, 18, was behind the wheel on Interstate 380 near Tobyhanna as she live-streamed her car ride with 19-year-old friend, Chaniya Morrison-Toomey, who can be heard saying “Are you going live?” in the now-deleted footage, according to the Associated Press. Before Hughes could answer, bright lights flash inside the car and sounds of screeching tires can be heard, followed by seven-minutes of blackness, the Scranton Times-Tribune reported.

    • Husband who hasn’t had sex in years asks, ‘Is this normal?’

Hi, Carolyn: Should I be worried that my wife and I have had no sex for literally years? I am guessing it is at least three years. Not even heavy make-out sessions. It just seems that my wife has no interest. I am afraid to broach the subject for fear of a negative answer. We don’t sleep in the same bed anymore either. I am a big snorer and chose to sleep in the guest room. It’s fine because she is a light sleeper and I am happier that she is getting her sleep. I do use a CPAP but it does come off sometimes. The no-sex thing just happened over time. We have both gained some weight but we are not obese — we could both lose 20 or 30 pounds. Is this normal or should we seek help? J.: Should I be

Scientists have discovered a feathered dinosaur tail trapped in a piece of 99-million-year-old amber, bought from an amber market in Myanmar. The specimen is definitive proof that two-legged dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex had bird-like feathers. While a dinosaur-era feather had been found embedded in amber in 2011 and again in June 2016, those small specimens…

    • What does "Hotel California" really mean? (And other questions for Don Henley)

The Eagles are among the 2016 Kennedy Center honorees. The band formed in the early 1970s and helped define classic rock on the radio, becoming one of the world’s most successful bands. But when drummer Don Henley hears one of their songs on the radio now, he usually turns it down. “After 44 years, you just really don’t want to hear ‘em when you’re off,” Henley said. “When I’m off duty, I’d rather listen to somebody else, or just silence. Silence is good. You don’t get much of it these days anywhere. So I’m a big fan of silence.” He may be a fan of silence, but with the Eagles, Don Henley created some of the most popular sounds in American music.   Like their hit song, the Eagles seemed really

    • Scientists discover dinosaur trapped in amber in unprecedented find

'Once in a lifetime find' The findings, which shed fresh light on how dinosaurs looked, are published in the December issue of Current Biology. Ryan McKellar, a paleontologist at the Royal Saskatchwan Museum in Canada and co-author of the paper, says he was blown away when Xing first showed him the piece of amber. "It's a once in a lifetime find. The finest details are visible and in three dimensions." Fragments of dinosaur-era bird wings have been found preserved in amber before but this is the first time part of a mummified dinosaur skeleton has been discovered, McKellar said. The tail section belongs to a young coelurosaurian -- from the same group of dinosaurs as the predatory velociraptors

    • Yes, Colin Kaepernick is hurting NFL ratings

Colin Kaepernick (No. 7) and 49ers teammates take a knee during the national anthem. The steady decline in NFL television ratings has been the biggest story of the football season, and arguably the biggest sports-business story of 2016. What is clear is that interest in watching primetime NFL games has waned, but what remains unclear are the exact causes, and which causes have had the largest impact.

    • Fake news gunman incident at Comet Ping Pong pizzeria, in D.C. (9 photos)

Edgar Maddison Welch, who has admitted to being the gunman who opened fire inside of the Washington, D.C., pizzeria Comet Ping Pong on Sunday, expressed regret in a new interview with the New York Times . "I just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way," he told the paper Wednesday, speaking via videoconference from an old hospital building next to a city jail. No one was injured by the gunfire, but Welch's actions drew national attention because he was motivated by a fringe conspiracy theory about the pizzeria. Police say Welch told them he wanted to "self-investigate" the theory, which purported that Comet is the center of a child-sex ring involving Hillary Clinton and her campaign chief.
