Vanilla Ice Cream Taste Test

Yahoo editors have selected this article as a favorite of 2013. It first ran on Yahoo Shopping on Feb. 1st and was one of the most popular stories of the year.

Epicurious indulged in 13 brands of vanilla ice cream, but only one got rave reviews from the editors.

W hen it comes to vanilla ice cream, you might be tempted to ask whether there's really that much of a difference in taste from one brand to another. But having tried 13 different brands of vanilla, we can positively confirm it: Not all vanilla is created equal.

In search of the best vanilla scoop, we started by excluding French vanilla and vanilla bean varieties in favor of plain old basic vanilla. What did we want from the perfect pint? A natural-looking frozen scoop that can be enjoyed in a bowl, on top of a sugar cone, or à la mode.

The Other Contenders

Most tasters thought SoCo Creamery was icy and tasted fruity, almost pineapple-y. 365 Organic was an unappealing yellow color, very thick and surprisingly bland.

And while we're fans of Blue Marble's other flavors, their brand's vanilla missed the mark: "Tastes like bad vanilla frosting," said one judge. "Needs a serious dosage of hot fudge," suggested another.

DES MOINES — A substitute teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old high school student in Cedar Rapids claims the student seduced her. Mary Beth Haglin was charged in July with sexual exploitation by a teacher. On Monday, she appeared on Dr. Phil, accusing the student of seducing her and sharing sexy photos with his friends. “Many people see him as the victim and me as the perpetrator. From a psychological standpoint and from every other standpoint, I feel like I am the victim,” Haglin said on the Dr. Phil show, citing the student's intelligence and “elevated vocabulary” as part of the seduction. Haglin pleaded not guilty to sexual exploitation by a school employee. Her trial is set to

    • Watch Joe Biden do a spectacular burnout in the Presidential Corvette

The Secret Service doesn't let people under its protection drive very often. When they do, it's normally a golf cart they're behind the wheel of. So after years of driving imprisonment, it's no surprise that Joe Biden pulled a spectacular burnout the second he got behind the wheel of his Corvette. DON'T MISS:  New tests confirm there’s one iPhone 7 model that’s much slower than the rest Jay Leno tweeted out a preview of Jay Leno's Garage featuring Biden. Leno shows up at the Secret Service training ground, where Biden was waiting with his very own 1967 Corvette. The car was a wedding gift from his father 49 years ago, and Biden's two sons recently had the engine rebuilt as a Christmas present. Our nation's leaders are not allowed to drive very often, so this is only the third time Biden's driven his pride and joy since being elected. You can tell he's missed spinning the tires just a little bit. It also seems that there's more to the episode than just Biden hooning around. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell also turns up towards the end with a more modern Corvette, so we're hoping for an elected officials muscle-car showdown in the near future. With just a few more months left in office, Biden is primed to be back driving soon, although even as a former Vie President, the Secret Service probably won't let him do this kinda thing on public roads.

    • After ‘jealous rage,’ killer sentenced to life without parole in Target parking lot murder

The eight-foot projection screen dropped from a courtroom ceiling. The surveillance video began to play. And from her seat in the second row, Cassandra Atkens — in court Thursday to watch her daughter’s killer be sentenced — knew what she was about to see. The video showed how light it still was at 7:17 p.m. June 1, 2015, in a Target store parking lot in Germantown where Atkens’s daughter, Mariam “Shadé” Adebayo, had agreed to meet ex-boyfriend Donald Bricker one more time. She was there to tell him it really was over. He pulled up in his truck, then got in her car and brought out a .44-caliber, replica-style black-powder revolver — a gun that he’d ordered online and that had arrived just that

    • Virginia Tech Students Made An Awful Jose Fernandez Sign To Mock Miami Football

College students, ironically, are not always known to be the brightest of bulbs, and whoever decided to hang this banner at Virginia Tech certainly isn’t doing anything to improve that reputation. Mocking the death of Miami Marlins’ pitcher Jose Fernandez, who passed away in a tragic boating accident last month, the sign was put out in advance of the Miami Hurricanes’ visit to Blacksburg for their ACC battle on Thursday night. Whoever made this sign wanted to make sure everyone knew that they respect Fernandez, as they extended the “courtesy” to throw an RIP at the end.

More than 1,300 U.S. kids suffer snakebites each year on average, with one in four attacks occurring in Florida and Texas, a new study reveals. All 50 states and Washington, D.C., reported snakebites to children between 2000 and 2013. And about one-fifth of these bites required admission to an intensive care unit, researchers found. “Any venomous snake can be dangerous with neurotoxic complications and problems with blood clotting,” said study lead author Dr. Joann Schulte, a medical epidemiologist. “Some children do die, and delays in treatment can be one reason,” said Schulte, who was with the North Texas Poison Control Center in Dallas at the time of the study. Besides Texas and Florida, states

Kourtney Kardashian had an awkward on-air moment Thursday morning when hosts of an Australian morning program asked how her sister Kim Kardashian is holding up after her robbery ordeal.   The questions was met with bizarre silence, while the reality TV star sat staring off camera, presumably listening to the panicked advice of her publicists.  SEE ALSO: Khloe Kardashian DGAF about Donald Trump calling her a 'piglet' Making matters worse, the connection was dropped. When producers got Kardashian back on the line post-ad break, she explained "we had a bad connection."   "I think she's totally blanking me on that question," said David Campbell, co-host of Today Extra , adding, "She could just say her sister is fine! I mean I think we just said that you know we're very concerned and we were onside and we hoped that everyone's fine, which I still do." According to The Herald Sun , Kourtney insisted that she be re-connected to the show’s host in order to address the question. Once connected, she discussed how the Kardashian klan was feeling after her sister was held at gunpoint during the Paris robbery.  "I think we're all really still shaken up and I just — you know, I think she has a big supportive family and I know that, like, all of the traumatic things that we've been through, you know, we get through them together as a family and that's what family is all about," she said.  While it might not be the most informative response ever uttered, it may have been worth it as an act of "saving face." What's a potential little white lie about a technical glitch between friends, anyway?   Many of us would love to use the old "we just had a bad connection" excuse to get out of conversations IRL, sometimes.   Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in Paris
