Vanilla Ice Cream Taste Test

Yahoo editors have selected this article as a favorite of 2013. It first ran on Yahoo Shopping on Feb. 1st and was one of the most popular stories of the year.

Epicurious indulged in 13 brands of vanilla ice cream, but only one got rave reviews from the editors.

W hen it comes to vanilla ice cream, you might be tempted to ask whether there's really that much of a difference in taste from one brand to another. But having tried 13 different brands of vanilla, we can positively confirm it: Not all vanilla is created equal.

In search of the best vanilla scoop, we started by excluding French vanilla and vanilla bean varieties in favor of plain old basic vanilla. What did we want from the perfect pint? A natural-looking frozen scoop that can be enjoyed in a bowl, on top of a sugar cone, or à la mode.

Others liked its snow-white appearance and the fact that it's made from only six ingredients.

Cons: Can be bought only at Whole Foods Market.

Editors' Rating: 4 forks out of 4

The Other Contenders

Most tasters thought SoCo Creamery was icy and tasted fruity, almost pineapple-y. 365 Organic was an unappealing yellow color, very thick and surprisingly bland.

And while we're fans of Blue Marble's other flavors, their brand's vanilla missed the mark: "Tastes like bad vanilla frosting," said one judge. "Needs a serious dosage of hot fudge," suggested another.

    • The Wisconsin recount may have a surprise in store after all

Thanks to the efforts of Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, a recount is underway in Wisconsin. It is highly unlikely to change the outcome — as Hillary Clinton’s campaign has stated — but it is much more likely to overturn some conventional wisdom about counting votes. In particular, we may learn, yet again, that computers are better than humans at counting ballots. Wisconsin’s most recent experience with a statewide recount provides some useful background for the current recount. In 2011, David Prosser ran against JoAnne Kloppenburg for a seat on the state supreme court. After the initial count, Prosser was 7,316 votes ahead of Kloppenburg, out of 1.5 million votes cast. If you're looking for a case study in how not to respond to a bad Yelp review, here it goes. Twenty-year-old Lan Cai was driving home from her waitressing job last summer when she was hit by a drunk driver; the resulting multi-car collision left her with two broken bones in her back. Having never been in a major accident, Cai enlisted the services of the Tuan A. Khuu law firm of Houston to help her navigate the insurance claim and other aspects of the process. But according to Cai, the experience turned sour quickly. In a review she posted on Yelp, the young waitress claimed the lawyers wouldn't respond to her calls or emails, and when they finally did meet with her, "they were very pushy." Read

As a theoretical physicist based in Cambridge, I have lived my life in an extraordinarily privileged bubble. Cambridge is an unusual town, centred around one of the world’s great universities. Within that town, the scientific community that I became part of in my 20s is even more rarefied. And within that scientific community, the small group of international theoretical physicists with whom I have spent my working life might sometimes be tempted to regard themselves as the pinnacle. In addition to this, with the celebrity that has come with my books, and the isolation imposed by my illness, I feel as though my ivory tower is getting taller. So the recent apparent rejection of the elites in both

In February, Ri attended an award ceremony and dinner for North Korean scientists after the launch of the Kwangmyongsong-4 earth observation satellite on Feb. 7.
