Trendiest Halloween costumes for kids

Gone are the days when you could throw a sheet over your head and call it a Halloween costume. Halloween is serious business. Retailers expect Americans to spend about $8 billion on the day, according to a National Retail Federation survey conducted by BIGinsight.

Of course, part of the fun of the holiday is coming up with a creative Halloween costume. About $1.1 billion will be spent on children’s costumes this year.

For kids, there will be plenty of the traditional costumes: princesses, superheroes, witches and pirates. But even these popular themes are subject to interpretation.

We’ve taken a look at what the trendiest costumes are for kids this year. Read on to find out what they are; some may surprise you.

Fuzzy Owl Costume

Forget the ill-fitting vinyl costumes. These days, the selection of adorable baby and toddler costumes seems endless, so it will likely be a tough call when it comes time to select a costume for Halloween.

After trick or treating, it will be back to the pen for this guy. That is, unless, the warden gives the kid a break for good behavior, so maybe it'll be the play pen.

Super Heroes

Suggested Price: $29.99

This is expected to be a big year for superhero costumes. Halloween retailers expect both boys and girls to hop on board the trend.

According to the National Retail Federation’s survey, Batman will be the second-most popular costume (behind princesses), followed by Spider-Man in third. But Halloween costume retailers said the release of Marvel’s Avengers has given new life to sales of superheroes that had tended to be less popular in years past.

They expect sales of Hulk costumes to rise significantly. Iron Man and Captain America also have new fans.

Suggested Price: $68

Although ninja costumes don’t rank among the NRF’s 10 most popular costumes of the year, retailers say they are gaining in popularity. This ninja warrior is ready for battle. The six-piece set includes a mask, tunic, hooded chest piece, belt, pants and sword.

Skylanders - Spyro
Suggested Price: $34.99

Costume retailers expect to see the continued popularity of characters based on video games and apps. Plenty of characters from “Angry Birds,” “Mario Brothers” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” will be knocking on the door, looking for candy.

This year, they will likely be joined by characters from the popular Activision game “Skylanders.” Pictured here is Spyro, the magical dragon.

Gnome on a Mushroom
Suggested Price: $79

Grown-ups aren’t the only ones looking for some humor in their costumes this year. According to Karen van Ert, chief marketing officer of Buy Seasons, shoppers are looking for costumes that will make you laugh. “Gnomes are very popular this year,” she said.

Katy Perry Candy Girl
Suggested Price: $44.99

Katy Perry costumes were popular last year, but some were not that appropriate for Perry’s younger fans. This “Candy Girl” costume, new this year at, should hit the spot.

Galaxy Princess

Suggested Price: $69 for the costume
Accessories: $9 and up

There is no end to the many variations on the “princess” costume. No wonder it remains the most popular children’s costume for Halloween. Girls looking to put a different twist on the idea may want to consider this “Galaxy Princess” costume.

The costume may be a bit out of this world, but it’s not off trend. Neon colors in costumes are hot this year.

Hunter Jordan Maxon from New Richmond, Wisconsin, had a very odd encounter with a very friendly deer.  After setting up a deer stand in a clearing, Maxon looked around to see if any wildlife had wandered into the area before he started hunting. That's when he noticed a buck about 70 yards away.  "I figured I'd wait for him to leave the clearing, however, after five minutes of standing there, he wouldn't leave," Maxon explained on YouTube.  SEE ALSO: Deer fearlessly leaps through house window, becomes viable stuntman Instead of leaving, the buck approaches Maxon, who gently convinces the dear to come a bit closer with noises you'd use to coax a cat or dog.  The deer comes so close that Maxon is

    • There's a chance Eric Trump hasn't paid for a cup of lemonade for years

Eric Trump appears to have committed one of the cardinal sins of fast food: Putting a soft drink in a free water cup. The noted map enthusiast was caught with a clear cup of lemonade in his hand at an In-N-Out restaurant after Wednesday's presidential debate.  Although Trump's stolen beverage was conveniently absent from his own Instagram photo, the truth emerged when he took a a pic with another customer...who is now an inadvertent whistleblower. SEE ALSO: The Trumpkin is back to make Halloween terrifying again this is a photo of my homey grant with trumps kid at in-n-out & trumps kid is drinking lemonade outta the free water cup... — Kush Vonnegut (@xwnklmnx) October 20, 2016 For the record, In-N-Out confirmed to BuzzFeed that clear plastic cups are indeed for water only, so Trump was clearly on the wrong side of the law here. But after seeing something as viscerally disturbing as this theft, it's natural to still have a few questions. For instance:  Why did Eric Trump elect not to buy a cup of lemonade? Has Eric Trump ever paid for a cup of lemonade? Has his wife's purchase of a drink created a loophole that allows Eric Trump to take some of her drink and put it in his cup? Can a nice cup of lemonade, one of our society's best achievements, ever truly be owned? The discovery of an ancient piece of aluminium is being hailed as evidence that aliens visited Earth 250,000 years ago. The mysterious hunk of metal was found in Romania during the 1970s, when the country was under communist rule. Now tests at a lab in Lausanne, Switzerland, have revealed that the strange fragment of metal is made up of 90 percent aluminium and is 250,000 years old. Aluminium was not produced by mankind until about 200 years ago, so the discovery of the large chunk that could be up to 250,000 years old is being held up as a sensational find. Gheorghe Cohal, the Deputy Director of the Romanian Ufologists Association, told local media: "Lab tests concluded it is an old UFO fragment

By Idrees Ali and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. navy destroyer sailed near islands claimed by China in the South China Sea on Friday, drawing a warning from Chinese warships to leave the area. The U.S. action was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, U.S. officials said. The Chinese Defense Ministry called the move "illegal" and "provocative," saying that two Chinese warships had warned the U.S. destroyer to leave.
