The perfect shave

The perfect shave

At New York City's Art of Shaving, the best shave of your life will cost you $55 – and no small amount of courage. In this era of ultralite pivoting four-blade razors so safe you can practically swallow them, it's unnerving, and a bit thrilling, to have an imposing Russian man named Boris come at you with six inches of gleaming diamond-sharpened steel.

At the risk of spoiling the show, though, Art of Shaving cofounder Eric Malka has a secret for you: It's just a clever parlor trick. "Men don't realize the key to a great shave is prepping," Malka says. In other words, that neoprene-smooth feeling you get afterward has less to do with the blade than with the other things being done to your face while you're focused on the steadiness of Boris's hand.

Things like opening your pores with steam and hot water, massaging essential oils into your beard, and lathering you up with an impossibly thick shave cream. Here's something else Malka probably shouldn't tell you: You can get pretty much the same effect right in your own WC. Just follow these four steps.

Step One
Make sure you've prepped your beard with warm water. Ideally, you'll shave in the shower, but after-shower shaving works nearly as well.

Step Two
Once the moisture has softened your whiskers, massage some lubricant into your beard. Purists insist on a thick-lather cream, but gel provides a more than adequate alternative, and lets you see what you're doing as you shave your sideburns.

Step Three
Now you're ready to shave. Apply light pressure, and shave with the direction of your whiskers to minimize irritation. When you're done, splash cold water on your newly shorn cheeks to close up the pores.

Step Four
After you've patted your face dry, moisturize with an aftershave balm. The moisture soothes your skin and prepares it for the next time you – or Boris – drag a sharp blade across your neck.

    • ‘Ice cream killer’ is so dangerous, she’s headed to a men’s prison

A Spanish murderer dubbed the “ice cream killer” is so dangerous, she’s being moved to an all-male prison to serve out her life sentence, according to a new report. Estibaliz Carranza, 38, earned the chilling nickname after she shot her boyfriend and ex-husband to death in 2008, cut up their bodies with a chainsaw and hid them in the freezers of her ice cream store in Vienna, Austria. The Mexican-born Spanish national stored the body parts in ice cream tubs filled with concrete and disguised the smell with air fresheners. Now, she’ll spend the rest of her life in an all-male prison in Asten, Austria, because she shows an “advanced reduction of the relevant dangerousness,” according to the Mirror.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are great upgrades, especially if you opt for the dual-camera-equipped Plus, but they don't really look any different from Apple's previous iPhones. If the new device looks anything like this, Apple will probably have a winner on its hands in time to celebrate the iPhone's tenth anniversary. Like the current iPhone, the iPhone 8 models on display here have curved edges, but both the front and back are made of glass, while the frame is stainless steel.

    • Caroline Kennedy Leaves Japan After 3 Years as US Ambassador

Caroline Kennedy is stepping down Wednesday after three years as U.S. ambassador to Japan, where she was welcomed like a celebrity and worked to deepen the U.S.-Japan relationship despite regular flare-ups over American military bases on the southern island of Okinawa. She ruffled some feathers early on by tweeting her opposition to Japan's dolphin hunt, shortly after her embassy issued a statement expressing "disappointment" that Japan's leader had visited a shrine that memorializes World War II war criminals, among others. During her tenure, though, the conservative Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and liberal U.S. President Barack Obama built a relationship of trust despite coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum.

Selena Gomez might be the ultimate style chameleon. For last year's InStyle Golden Globes afterparty, Selena chose a vaguely boho, ethereal off-the-shoulder white gown from J. Mendel. But for 2016's UNICEF Ball in Los Angeles? Selena did a complete style 180. With the help of her stylist, Kate Young, Selena selected a long, red leather Louis Vuitton dress. Far from appearing heavy, the dress seemed relatively weightless thanks to floral cutout details and a ruffle around the neck. While at the event, Selena made the rounds and said hello to some of her very stylish friends, including new face of Louis Vuitton Léa Seydoux and designer Nicolas Ghesquière. • The Time Has Come: Moving Vans Spotted Outside the Obama Family’s New D.C. Home

With just three days to go until President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, movers were spotted Tuesday hauling boxes and furniture off of two big trucks and into the new D.C. digs of Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama. The family, of course, spent the past eight years in office in the White House, where their personal belongings in the private quarters were rarely seen by the public (except when photos of the upstairs residence were published in a spread in Architectural Digest last December). Looky-loos passing through the Obamas’ new northwest D.C. neighborhood on Tuesday couldn’t get any better sense of the (soon-to-be-former) first family’s style, because all of the furniture being moved was neatly shrouded in opaque plastic sheeting.
