The perfect shave

The perfect shave

At New York City's Art of Shaving, the best shave of your life will cost you $55 – and no small amount of courage. In this era of ultralite pivoting four-blade razors so safe you can practically swallow them, it's unnerving, and a bit thrilling, to have an imposing Russian man named Boris come at you with six inches of gleaming diamond-sharpened steel.

At the risk of spoiling the show, though, Art of Shaving cofounder Eric Malka has a secret for you: It's just a clever parlor trick. "Men don't realize the key to a great shave is prepping," Malka says. In other words, that neoprene-smooth feeling you get afterward has less to do with the blade than with the other things being done to your face while you're focused on the steadiness of Boris's hand.

Things like opening your pores with steam and hot water, massaging essential oils into your beard, and lathering you up with an impossibly thick shave cream. Here's something else Malka probably shouldn't tell you: You can get pretty much the same effect right in your own WC. Just follow these four steps.

Step One
Make sure you've prepped your beard with warm water. Ideally, you'll shave in the shower, but after-shower shaving works nearly as well.

Step Two
Once the moisture has softened your whiskers, massage some lubricant into your beard. Purists insist on a thick-lather cream, but gel provides a more than adequate alternative, and lets you see what you're doing as you shave your sideburns.

Step Three
Now you're ready to shave. Apply light pressure, and shave with the direction of your whiskers to minimize irritation. When you're done, splash cold water on your newly shorn cheeks to close up the pores.

Step Four
After you've patted your face dry, moisturize with an aftershave balm. The moisture soothes your skin and prepares it for the next time you – or Boris – drag a sharp blade across your neck.

    • Husband who hasn’t had sex in years asks, ‘Is this normal?’

Hi, Carolyn: Should I be worried that my wife and I have had no sex for literally years? I am guessing it is at least three years. Not even heavy make-out sessions. It just seems that my wife has no interest. I am afraid to broach the subject for fear of a negative answer. We don’t sleep in the same bed anymore either. I am a big snorer and chose to sleep in the guest room. It’s fine because she is a light sleeper and I am happier that she is getting her sleep. I do use a CPAP but it does come off sometimes. The no-sex thing just happened over time. We have both gained some weight but we are not obese — we could both lose 20 or 30 pounds. Is this normal or should we seek help? J.: Should I be

    • Ciara's New Lob Is So Chic, You'll Want to 1-2 Step to the Salon to Copy It

At least we have 2016 to thank for one thing: The continued reign of the super popular—and universally flattering—lob haircut. And now, thanks to Ciara, we've got another example to save to our "haircut inspiration" iPhone folder. (What, like you don't have one?) The singer debuted her new haircut on Instagram this week, and it no doubt will have you re-think going longer and darker for winter. Ciara has spent most of the year with long blond, ombré hair. In fact, we loved it so much it topped out as one of our favorite cuts and colors for spring (That's it pictured above.) • Days of Our Lives Star Joseph Mascolo, Who Played Stefano, Dead at 87

Joseph Mascolo, who played iconic villain Stefano DiMera on the NBC daytime soap Days of Our Lives, has died. He was 87 years old. Mascolo passed away Thursday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the show said in a statement on Friday. He joined the Days cast in 1982 and made crime lord/business tycoon Stefano DiMera into one of the most hated (and most loved) bad guys in soap-opera history. Mascolo left and returned to the role of Stefano several times over the years, even joining CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful for an extended stint from 2001 to 2006. But he always came back to Days, most recently for the character’s death earlier this year. He also made appearances on TV shows like

    • In ‘Jackie,’ Jackie Kennedy is a bad widow. That’s good.

When I began dating the man who would eventually become my husband, my mom had only one concern: that he, 17 years my senior, would die and leave me a “young widow.” “If he lives to the same age his father did, I’ll be 43 when he dies,” I said, laughing at how far away that impossible number seemed. I turned 40 last week. My husband is in good health (for a man of his advanced age, HI HONEY!), but I’d be lying if I said there’s not a small part of my brain constantly reminding me that he — we — have three years left. “Jackie” is the story of one of the most famous young widows in history: Jackie Kennedy was 34 when her husband was assassinated. I’ve only seen the archival footage that all of
