Finding the best workout headphones

Sweatproof, slip-free personal sound systems for rocking your fitness routine.

When you're working out solo, good music is the perfect partner. It can motivate you, inspire you, and carry you through pain to new personal bests. But it's hard to find headphones that can stay on through—or survive—a solid sweat session. After all, sweat can ruin more delicate headphones.

Not to worry, though. Several companies are taking note, making water-resistant, sweatproof headphones that can handle a marathon or a brutal CrossFit regimen, and even rinse clean when the work is done.

There are a few important considerations when choosing fitness headphones, namely fit, sound quality and where you'll use them.

For indoor workouts, like the gym, in-ear headphones are the best. You want them to block out all the ambient noise—grunting, weights clanking, the incessant whir of stationary bikes and treadmills—to focus on the task at hand. In-ear headphones fit snugly into the ear canal, like earplugs, preventing those outside noises from interrupting your flow. Because they better seal off the ear, you can keep the volume lower on your mp3, iPod or smartphone, allowing you richer sound without blasting your tunes.

If you’re running or cycling outside, open-back earphones—especially earbuds, clip-ons and some neckband designs—that sit just outside the ear canal allow you to hear some ambient sounds, like traffic and other potential hazards (a bear on the trail, perhaps) to keep you out of harm’s way.

For workout headphones to be good, they need to sound great—deep and clear bass notes, tonal clarity and rich, sharp highs—and be stable during exercise, otherwise you’re wasting time fiddling with gear, the workout suffers, and you’re frustrated. Almost all headphones are sold with several pairs of ear tips—many with antimicrobial treatments to reduce the buildup of bacteria—that allow the user to dial in the best fit, no matter the activity. Add the structural back up of an ear clip, hook or neckband, and those personal speakers aren’t going anywhere.

These are 8 of the best workout headphones available. We ranked them based on sound quality, apparent durability, online consumer reviews and price. When you add it all up, it comes down to value. Where two different headphones had comparably good sound and one cost twice as much, we ruled in favor of the cheaper pair.  Where the price was in the same range, the better-performing pair takes the cake. It's that simple. We believe that all will stand up to sweat, stay in your ears and deliver top-notch sound through workout after workout. So queue up your playlist, and get ready to rock out on your workout.

I was only in the classroom for 45 minutes, but that was long enough to compel me to write a letter to the teacher once I left. I’ll be honest, I have zero qualifications as it relates to child education. My only qualification and reason for being in a kindergarten class that day is my oldest child is a kindergartner. He attends a public school and I was in his classroom as a parent volunteer. His teacher had asked parents to sign up to help during the daily Literacy Center portion of the morning. I was excited to go in, see my son in his classroom, and meet his classmates. When I arrived, the class was sitting on the floor, singing, and drawing the alphabet in the air with their fingers. • Get a First Look at the Palm Springs Home Where the Obamas Are Vacationing Right Now

After handing over the keys to the White House to President Trump on Friday, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama retreated to this stunning 11,000-square-foot stucco home in the Palm Springs area of Southern California for a little time off. Built in the early 1970s by architect Howard Lapham, the home (nicknamed Icha Mayapan, or “exclusive estate”) is a standout example of Mayan Revival design, a popular midcentury style influenced by several Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes from the 1920s, including the Hollyhock and Ennis houses in Los Angeles. Its current owners, James Costos, ambassador to Spain and Angora under President Obama, and L.A.-based designer Michael S. Smith, who also redecorated the White House while the Obamas lived there, restored the home several years ago.

City child-welfare workers had previously found cuts, welts and bruises on several children living in the Queens home where a 5-year-old boy was found dead Sunday, while also uncovering signs of sexual abuse and evidence that the kids didn’t have enough food or clothing, law-enforcement sources said Tuesday. The city Department of Investigation is now probing the Administration for Children’s Services’ handling of the case, authorities said. “(DOI) has sent a request to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services for access to records from the City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) regarding ACS’s involvement with five-year-old Michael Guzman,” DOI Commissioner Mark Peters said in a statement.

    • Highly contagious stomach flu rips through US schools

They went down like dominoes in Aimee Romero’s household. First her 5-year-old daughter came home sick from school. Hours later her 8-year-old son started vomiting every 20 minutes for six hours. Next she started feeling sick. Two days later, it was her husband’s turn. The Romero family in Greentown, Ind., caught norovirus. Among the most contagious of all viruses, it is striking hard this winter, immobilizing families and even prompting schools to shut down due to student absences. The Eastern Howard School Corporation in Indiana, where Ms. Romero’s children go, closed on Tuesday after 27 percent of the elementary-school children had been out sick the prior Friday. • The Elephant Lurking Behind India's Currency Drought, And Why We Should Be Talking About It

The story thus far is as follows: India has, and always has had, an enormous problem due to rampant corruption and illegal/undeclared/non-taxed wealth, a bulk of which is thought to be stored as physical cash. Since decades of trying to curb the menace through enforcement has gone without much success, the current government decided to attempt to tackle the problem through “the other end;” i.e., by declaring that the largest denominations of currency would be replaced by new currency notes within a few months (“de-monetized”), and allowing the population to exchange the “old” cash held physically, for new currency notes in a regulated manner, which would result in the weeding out of this illegal cash, since this would not be brought back into the system by the holders who would be unable to tie the wealth to a legal and reasonable source.
