The best shopping deals in March

It has been a hard winter for much of the United States. Those of you on the East Coast are likely reading this and longing for spring a little more than usual. Entering March in no way guarantees that the worst is over, but you know we’re getting close to nicer days and longer nights.

If you’re looking for shopping deals, however, you need to keep a wintery mindset. This month you’ll find deals on winter coats and sports gear. As the season ends, the sales begin. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for small consumer electronics – such as Blu-ray players, MP3 players and mobile phones – as well as luggage and the PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 3

After months of speculation we know now that the PlayStation 4 is real and it’s coming soon. This makes March a good time to buy the PlayStation 3 – a powerful game console and Blu-ray player with a lot of life left and a huge library of excellent games.

Dealnews.com says in years past, prices on previous-generation consoles have dropped around 60 percent once the next consoles were released. “We predict that the 160GB PS3 model will fall to as low as $144.”

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S

Smart phones

February’s Mobile World Congress played host to a full slate of new smart phones that are coming our way. What does that mean to you?

If you’re content with last year’s models, this is the month to get a new smart phone. Dealnews.com says the iPhone 4S, which would have cost you $350 (with a two-year plan) a year ago, can now be had for $99. If you don’t need Siri talking to you all day, get the iPhone 4 from AT&T for 99 cents (with a two-year contract, of course).

HDTVs

HDTVs

HDTVs

Regular readers of this column may be noticing a trend – it seems like it’s always a good time to buy an HDTV. They come up on these lists so often because they continue to drop in price.

Since Black Friday in November the prices on HDTVs, especially big ones, have been steadily going down. Chances are they will continue to slide until they come up against the point of no profit for the retailer and manufacturer. It’s hard to tell when that day will come, but it’s a safe bet that consumers who go all in this month on a giant HDTV will have little worry about buyer’s remorse.

Right now, there's a great offer at dealnews.com from Dell Home on a Samsung 51" 1080p plasma HDTV that includes a $100 Dell gift card, for $648 plus free shipping.

2013 models are on their way, and retailers need to clear their shelves.

Luggage

Luggage

Luggage

If last year’s numbers are any indication; this is a good time of year to buy luggage. That probably dovetails nicely with your desire to get out of town to escape the nasty weather you’ve been tolerating for months.

“Last year, luggage deals began to pick up steam in March, with sales at Wal-Mart, eBags, Macy’s, and Sears. This carried on in earnest throughout the spring though, so we’ll continue to see an influx of deals in the coming months as well,” according to Dealnews.com.

Snowboards

Snowboards

Winter coats, clothing and sports gear

If you’re looking for coats, sweaters, gloves or other winter apparel, March is a good month for you.

Retailers will clear out the last of their inventory at rock bottom prices to make room for the warm weather styles coming in. This gives consumers an opportunity to get a head start on next season’s needs at bargain-basement prices. Try not to be tempted by the new spring styles hitting the racks while you’re shopping for winter clothing deals. This is not the time to buy spring stuff.

Ski and snowboard season is nearing its end in most of the country. This is a great time to find lower prices on skis, snowboards, boots, accessories and apparel. These things can get expensive if you’re an avid skier or just a hobbyist. Renting this stuff is no picnic, either.

Currently on backcountry.com, you can save 50% on a DC Torstein SE Snowboard, only $235 with a regular price of $470.

Jewelry

March is one of the six “non-gift-giving months.” The gift-giving months are February, May, June, October, November and December, when jewelry prices go up in advance of Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas and weddings.

Jewelers tend to make the vast majority of their profits on the gift-giving months, so they drop their prices on off months such as March. During the non-gift-giving months, you’ll be in a better position to negotiate with jewelers, who are more eager to make sales.

BlueNile.com has several beautiful pieces on sale, including a 36" Akoya cultured pearl necklace with 14k white gold for $115, saving you 32% off its original price.

    • Pictures of Mcdonald's new Big Macs are already sweeping the internet

People across the country are already stumbling across McDonald's (MCD) all new Big Macs, which were originally unveiled last November and scheduled for an early 2017 launch.  The Grand Mac, which rests on a larger sesame seed bun, is made with two beef patties that weigh in at one-third of a pound compared to a traditional Big Mac, which has two, 1.6-ounce beef patties. Think of this one as a supersized Big Mac. The Mac Jr. is a essentially a single-layer Big Mac, which may be more ideal for the hands of kids (great news, right?).  Each sandwich has the traditional Big Mac sauce.  McDonald's started testing the Grand Mac and Mac Jr. in more than 120 restaurants in the central Ohio and Dallas

In the following Unhealthiest Food segment, we've rounded up the unhealthiest breakfast sandwiches offered at 6 top fast food service chains in Canada: Tim Hortons, McDonald’s, Subway, Starbucks, A&W, and Burger King . On a 2,000 calorie per day diet, the daily recommended intake for the average Canadian adult is about 65 grams of fat (no more than 20 grams saturated), and between 1,500 – 2,400 mg of sodium, so we’ve also rounded up some healthier alternatives.
