Which frozen waffles are the best, and which can you "leggo"?

Are there any breakfast goods as heartwarmingly delicious as waffles? Think back to your childhood, when you eagerly anticipated the "pop" of the toaster, with steaming, crispy waffles cheerily ejected from the slots, ready for a deluge of syrup.

Oh, the memories.

Whether you instinctively say "leggo my Eggo" or wax nostalgic about Aunt Jemima's waffles, truth is, there are a myriad number of brands of waffles out there these days. Many also purport to be "homestyle," which is dubious at best, considering they are found in the frozen section. That said, who has the time to make fresh waffles, let alone actually owns a waffle maker?

(See more: Best-tasting generic food brands)

Eight Daily Meal editors blind-tasted eight popular frozen waffle brands readily available in most frozen-food sections. From the aforementioned Eggo waffles of your childhood to the health nut's go-to (Kashi 7 Grain Waffles), editors made notes dissecting each waffle's texture, flavor, smell, and overall pleasantness. Was the waffle too dry? Crispy? Could it hold up to a healthy smothering of syrup?

Lowest Score: Van's Natural Foods Whole Grain Waffles (Pictured above left)

Van's Natural Foods Whole-Grain Waffles had the lowest score in the pack. From their coarse, chalky texture to the lack of flavor, these waffles were mostly disliked for tasting "too healthy."

As one editor put it, "Why does it taste healthy? Waffles shouldn’t taste healthy. It’s like you could never have a delicious, healthy cupcake. Delicious, healthy waffles don’t exist."

Kashi 7 Grain Waffles

Best Aroma: Kashi 7 Grain Waffles

From the comments the editors made, the Kashi 7 Grain Waffles had the best smell, citing the sweet, honey-like scent. There's no accounting for taste, however; this waffle was grainy and bland, except for the slightest hint of sweetness.

It definitely looked like a whole-wheat waffle, though it was a little thin compared to the other brands. This thinness did contribute a crunch, however.

Eggo Homestyle Waffles

Average Taste: Eggo Homestyle Waffles

At 72.5 percent, Eggo Homestyle Waffles made an average showing in this tasting. This thinner waffle was also crunchier, especially in the cross-hatches of the waffle. It would probably hold up to syrup, and it's eggy flavor was definitely noted. It had a pronounced yellow color, and was generally considered on par with Aunt Jemima's Homestyle Waffles in terms of taste. It's a good middle-of-the road brand.

America's Choice Buttermilk Waffles

Third-place: America's Choice Buttermilk Waffles

With its soft, fluffy texture and hints of fruit-sweetness, America's Choice comes in third. Some editors noted it smells and tastes of blueberries, while two noted an entirely different quality — they described it as having an "animal feed" and "rabbit pellet" smell and taste. They were in the minority, however, as most of the panel enjoyed this waffle's light sweetness.

Aunt Jemima's Homestyle Waffle

Aunt Jemima's Homestyle Waffle

Topping the list is Aunt Jemima's Homestyle Waffle. It has an eggy, buttery flavor with a slight salty aftertaste. It's yellow color had many of the panelists wondering if this brand was actually Eggo.

Though not the most crunchy (in fact, it skewed towards chewy), it was considered the best waffle with syrup. It also tasted the "least healthy," which seems to be the ultimate standard for what makes a good waffle.

These are the people we see living their best lives, and inspiring our travels on a daily basis. These ambassadors help us all discover the world, whether its exploring a set of national parks, embarking on an African safari, or just taking some time to enjoy the sound of waves from a beach in Europe. Follow along as we introduce more of our ambassadors on the T+L website and social accounts. Sam Horine (@samhorine on Instagram) is a New York -based photographer and while his hometown may be his favorite place to take photos, he doesn't let that stop him from traveling the world. After growing up in a small town in Maine and poring over travel magazines like National Geographic, he's turned taking travel photos into a full-time gig. I started going to Europe in high school,Horine said. I traveled as much as I could in collegeI was poor and broke as a college student. It was always something that was important to me, seeing the world, having different perspectives, and trying new things. But it was after moving to New York City that he accidentallyfell into photography. I had taken pictures for years, and I was shooting music in the mid-2000s,he said. I had a lot of friends in bands. It was right around the time all of these blogs were happening. I connected with a lot of other photographers and writers and we created this little network. During all of this, he was still travelingadmittedly only a couple of times a year. And then came along the social media boom, which opened up all kinds of opportunities for travel brands and tourism groups. It was amazingpeople would pay me to go places with my iPhone and take photos,Horine said. And the rest is history. Just last year, Horine visited more than 13 different places. So, which destination around the world has the pull to make someone who travels the world for a living put it at the top of their list? Italy and Greece, for Horine. I was in Rome on a press trip,he said. Afterwards, me, my girlfriend, and a friend of mine who lives in Rome flew over to Greece and visited Santorini. We stayed in this dope cave house on Airbnb. We drank amazing wine, ate amazing food, it was my friend's birthday, we went sailing every day, jumped in the Mediterranean. I'd think, Hey, I feel like getting up for the sunrise. So I did. Italy was so good, he paid it another visit after experiencing Greece. It was one of those destinations I've been wanting to visit forever, he said.I had always known it would be great, but it was even better than I thought. I went to Cinque Terreanother bucket list destination. But, he still cites New York City as one of his favorite place to take photos: New York Cityit's my home, so I have to keep coming back.

    • The Chiefs need to finally address their biggest problem

Well this stinks. I know you’re probably expecting another installment in the Good/Bad series from me today, but honestly I don’t see a point. I chose that format in an attempt to organize my thoughts into different categories, but trying to list what the Kansas City Chiefs did right in Sunday night’s game seems pretty fruitless when the outcome was the end of the season. For the better part of this year I’ve done my best to try and put my fandom aside and analyze each game as a professional. But in my multiple attempts to write this out late Sunday night, I couldn’t. I tried a few different ways to numb the sting of watching my childhood team fall short again. I indulged in a few more beverages

    • How to enable the ‘dark mode’ feature hiding in your iPhone browser right now

Apple's iOS 10 software is packed full of new features. In fact, there are so many new features that it's impossible to remember them all, which is why we often publish collections of lesser-known tips and tricks. A perfect example is this collection of 5 iPhone features only power users know about  — we always want to help people get the most out of their smartphones. When iOS 10 was first released as a closed beta last summer during WWDC 2016, developers instantly began picking it apart. In doing so, they stumbled upon a fantastic looking "dark mode" feature hiding inside iOS . The good news is it was there. The bad news, as we all know, is that it wasn't enabled when iOS 10 was finally released in September. Rumors suggest that a new " theater mode " might be introduced in iOS 10.3, but nothing has been confirmed at this point. What you might not know, however, is that there's already a dark mode feature hidden inside your iPhone browser. Night Shift is a nifty new feature Apple introduced in iOS 10 that reduces the amount of blue light emitted by an iPhone or iPad display at night. It theoretically helps users sleep better, but it doesn't do anything to make text more visible in low light situations. For that, you need "dark mode," which switches things up and makes the background black with light colored text. Dark mode is available in many third-party iOS apps and even a handful of first-party apps. Sadly, however, there's no system-wide dark mode feature for the time being. That said, there's actually a special dark mode in Safari that most people don't know about, and it'll let you read just about any article on the web in light text on a black background. Here's how to enable it: 1) First, load any article in Safari (if you're reading this Safari on an iPhone or iPad, you're good to go). 2) Tap the reader mode icon in the left corner of the URL bar. You'll then see something that looks like this: 3) Tap the "aA" icon in the right corner of the URL bar and you'll get a drop down menu that looks like this: 4) Tap the black circle all the way to the right in the top row of the drop down menu. Presto — you've just enabled dark mode in Safari: Here's what your screen will look like once you start scrolling around: In-line pictures will still display normally, but the rest of the page will be dark, as pictured above. It's not the system-wide dark mode we've all been waiting for, but people spend a tremendous amount of time reading in Safari, so this should be a big improvement at night.
