Super Savings on Super Bowl Sunday

FinanciallyFit

Did you know that Super Bowl Sunday is the number one at-home party event of the year? If you’re hosting a get-together (as millions of you are!), you’re likely looking for ways to throw the best party ever, at a price you can afford.

Here are some Super Saving tips on big screen TVs, pizzas, and a party menu that’ll feed 10--for under $50:

Big Screen TVS
If you didn’t snatch up a big screen over Black Friday, you’re in luck.  Retailers are offering competitive prices right now, in hopes that you’re one of the 5 million Americans planning on buying one for the big game.

At Kmart, all TVS are on sale the week before the Super Bowl.  One of the best deals: the 32” Samsung LCD TV.  It’ll be $50 off, coming in at about $280.  If you want to go bigger than that, Amazon’s got a 55” Samsung for $1897, Sam’s Club has a 60” inch Vizio for $888; the 70” Vizio is going for $1598--that’s a $300 price cut!

Pizzas
It may not surprise you that Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day of the year for pizza deliveries, but what may surprise you are all the special deals.

For example, Pizza Hut is offering the Big Dinner Box, which feeds 6 people, for just $20.  Domino’s lets you choose any two medium pizzas for $5.99 each.  Papa John’s, the official pizza sponsor of the NFL and the Super Bowl, is giving out free pizzas to winners of its online coin toss, and 35% discounts to everyone who votes! Millions of winners can redeem a free large, one topping pizza through March 10th.

Beer
Any idea how much beer Americans consumer on game day? 50 million cases!

For the best prices, shop the weekend-only sales at your local grocery store or pharmacy.  CVS, to name one, offers competitive prices on beer every week.  And drink to this: you can make your alcoholic beverages last longer by mixing and matching, says Kathy Spencer, author of How to Shop for Free

“Put 5 beers, 12 ounces of frozen fruit juice concentrate ($1.29), and 12 ounces of vodka ($8/bottle) into a punch bowl.  Mix it all up and serve!” For a splash of creativity, Spencer suggests using a fruit juice color that matches your team’s colors.

Party decorations
For party decorations, head to the Dollar Tree.  Napkins, plates, and cups - in your team’s colors - cost just $3.

Light bites
If your budget is only $50, and you’ve already spent $30 on drinks and décor, Spencer suggests a simple, yet hearty menu that consists of the following: a crock pot of chili ($9), chili cheese dogs ($5), nachos ($3), veggies and dip ($4), and some chips on the side ($1).

Recipes and price breakdowns for this menu - a win-win for your wallet and your guests! - can be found below.

Coming in at under $50 makes YOU a Savvy Spender, especially when you consider that purchases average about $65 per adult, on what is an $11-billion dollar day!

Step-by-Step How-To

• Chili (mild, not spicy)

- In a large pan cook ground beef on medium.

- Chop up one onion and add 3/4 of it to the pan. Save 1/4 to use on top of chili cheese dogs.

- Once the meat is cooked through, drain the meat and return it to the pan.

- Stir in McCormick's chili mix and mix thoroughly.

- Pour in a can of crushed tomatoes and a can of stewed tomatoes (optional: if you like your chili thick you can add a can of tomato paste or drain the stewed tomatoes).

- Drain one can of kidney beans and add to the pot.

- Stir together all ingredients and continue to cook on low until heated all the way through.

- Serve chili with a dollop of sour scream and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese.

Kathy's note: I cook my chili the night before a party and then refrigerate over night. The morning of the party, I put the chili in a crock pot and let it heat up then let it simmer on low in the crock pot for the party.

Nachos

- Pour chips onto a cooking tray and top with shredded cheese and salsa cook on 350 for 10-15 minutes in the oven.

- Remove from oven and top with sour cream and/or chili.

Chili Cheese dogs

- Boil all the hot dogs for about 5 minutes then place them in the hot dog rolls.

- Add chili on top then sprinkle with shredded cheese and minced onions and serve.

- Heat oil in pan on medium.

- Sautee onion, green pepper and zuchini and garlic until cooked.

- Pour in drained beans , tomatoes and chili powder.

- Cover and cook on low.

- Serve with a dollop of sour cream.

On a January afternoon in 1975, a boy sleigh riding in a Milwaukee suburb spotted what he thought was a doll lying face up in a storm drain along a sidewalk where children rode their bikes and waited for the school bus. Now, 42 years later, police have exhumed the remains of the child -- named "Baby Sarah" -- to create a DNA profile that might solve a mystery haunting the town of Waukesha for decades: Who are Sarah's parents, and what led to her death inside a sewer hours after her birth? "We’re working diligently to give Sarah a voice and we’re asking the public to share this story," Detective Tim Probst of the Waukesha Police Department said Monday. "This child deserves justice," Probst told Fox News.

If it’s universally acknowledged that a single man with a good fortune needs a wife, the American economy may be now illustrating the inverse of that corollary: Poor men with dwindling job prospects are going to lack marriage prospects.  The decline of the institution of marriage has been studied by social scientists and policymakers, but new economic research from MIT economics professor David Autor and his colleagues points to labor issues that helped Donald Trump win the presidential election: The decline of American manufacturing and the rise of Chinese imports. As manufacturing jobs dried up over the last few decades, blue-collar men have suffered from lower income, fewer job opportunities
