Five of the most annoying dress codes, decoded!

"Come As You Are"

I'm all for people getting creative with their party décor, but not so much with their dress code description. (Unless, you know, it's a theme party.) Island fancy, mountain chic, dress for the summer solstice (?!): these are all real dress decrees I've been given and all ones that immediately sent me into Gchat-polling madness to figure out what the host was trying to tell me.

Here's what I discovered about six of the most common and confusing dress codes in the process—and the best way to tackle each of them.

"Come As You Are" (Shown at top)

Really? Come in the moth-eaten t-shirt and old boxer shorts I've been wearing to watch Scandal? Didn't think so. I wish they just said "Hey people, jeans are fine" instead. That's how I usually approach it, then add a cozy button-down and flats. And then maybe a cool bag that makes me seem like I tried just a little bit.

Slim jeans, $49.99,; "Beeman" loafers, $395, Rag & Bone,; perfect shirt in crosshatch linen, $88,; ethnic clutch bag, $89.90, .

Denim & Diamonds

"Denim & Diamonds"

If this were a legit excuse to go buy myself some diamonds, I would love it. But on my budget it morphs into something more like "denim & something shiny."  In that case I'm all about some jewelry that's a little unexpected, like these earrings, which add a punch of color in with that bling. (And a denim skirt, which is slightly less predictable than jeans.)

Dark wash rip denim mini skirt, $39,; orange ds earrings, $412, Shourouk,; Heidi eyelet top, $138, Ella Moss,; "Toni" slim sandals, $208, .

Dressy Resort / Island Formal

"Dressy Resort" / "Island Formal"

Beach weddings! They love this dress code. Nail it by wearing a free-flowing maxi dress that flows a bit in the breeze and feels very "I'm on vacation."  Then add flat sandals that let you walk in the sand/boardwalk/beach grass without having to take them off.

Long printed dress, $90,; beaded tassel earrings, $55, Isabel Marant,; bangle set, $111, Kelly Wearstler,; embellished sandals, $90, .

Festive / Dress to Impress

(Photo courtesy of Ali Rio,, &

"Festive"/ "Dress to Impress"

Everytime I see this , I think , "What? Do you think I normally dress to not impress?" But I guess they mean to step it up a notch, in the sort of high-voltage stuff that seems very New Year's Eve to me: full skirts, sequins, mega-heels, major makeup.

Short-sleeve sequin dress, $140, Ali Ro,; false eyelashes, $15, Illamasqua,; navy party skirt, $195,; lace court shoe, $49.90,

Casual Chic

(Photo courtesy of J. Crew,, &

"Casual Chic"

This one should just say "casual but not really, haha" or "casual but not jeans-casual, eww." It means you've got to step it up a teeny bit with proper pants and a blouse, or maybe a sundress and sandals. (Add red lipstick if you're worried you're on the borderline. It always makes everything look a level more polished.)

Polka dot blouse, $198, J.Crew,; cuvee chic lipstick, $34, bite beauty,; trousers with zips on waist, $ 59.90,; leather ballerinas, $79.99,

    • General is most senior Army officer to kill self

WASHINGTON  — The Army acknowledged Friday that Maj. Gen. John Rossi committed suicide on July 31, making him the highest-ranking soldier ever to have taken his own life. Rossi, who was 55, was just two days from pinning on his third star and taking command of Army Space and Missile Command when he killed himself at his home at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. Investigators could find no event, infidelity, misconduct or drug or alcohol abuse, that triggered Rossi's suicide, said a U.S. government official with direct knowledge of the investigation. It appears that Rossi was overwhelmed by his responsibilities, said the official who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

    • This photo of a dog with a mouthful of ladybugs is freaking out pet owners

The photo that Kansas veterinarian Lindsay Mitchell posted to Facebook looked so unreal and disturbing that some who saw it went right to the hoax-busting website Snopes to verify it. But that didn’t stop the photo from being shared more than 53,000 times since it went up last week. Mitchell, of Hoisington, Kan., posted a graphic picture of a dog with a mouthful of Asian lady beetles. Ladybugs aren’t so cute when 30 to 40 of them are stuck to the roof of a dog’s mouth. “This is the second pup I have seen like this today. If your pet is drooling or foaming at the mouth look for these lady bugs. They cause ulcers on the tongue and mouth and have a very painful bite,” she wrote on the Hoisington

"When I went home to speak at the opening of the International AIDS conference [in July], I stood in front of an audience of thousands and made a plea to end the deadly stigma and discrimination that puts the burden of AIDS on the world's most vulnerable people," Theron said. "I argued that we should focus on the ones that are hardest to reach, the poor, young people, women, girls, gay and transgender people—the people bearing the brunt of the epidemic. "It wasn't long after I gave this speech talking about how we couldn't forget the most vulnerable among us that I realized I had forgotten someone," she continued. "I had forgotten to mention sex workers, some of the most stigmatized people in

DEAR ABBY: I have been with my wife for 16 years. She has a grown daughter who’s the mother of eight kids, but she only has five with her at this time. My problem is, the daughter got evicted, and all of a sudden she brought her belongings to the house. She didn’t ask or anything, she just showed up with the five kids and they are driving me up the wall. I already have two adolescent kids, so seven ain’t heaven. I have tried to talk with my wife, but she doesn’t listen. I’m fed up, Abby, and I’m looking for other accommodations. They have been here for two weeks and — by the way — my sons are now in school while her five are running wild in the house. Am I wrong for leaving? — NEEDS MY OWN SPACE

    • Strong earthquakes hit central Italy (20 photos)

Daylight revealed widespread damage in central Italy on Thursday after strong earthquakes overnight that caused panic and fear among residents just two months after a quake nearby killed hundreds. No one was killed this time, but dozens of people sustained minor injuries and about four others more serious ones, Italy’s Civil Protection Agency said. Many residents of Campi, a town of about 200, slept in their cars as aftershocks rocked the Umbria, Marche and Lazio regions throughout the night. The earthquake on Aug. 24 in the same area killed nearly 300 people and destroyed several towns. (Reuters) See more news-related photo galleries and follow us on Yahoo News Photo Tumblr .

    • Chris Christie's epic collapse

When Donald Trump made his strange trip to a Hindu anti-terrorism rally in Edison, New Jersey, Chris Christie — the governor who is heading Trump’s transition team — was noticeably absent. Garden State leaders could only wonder whether Christie was laying low because of the unpopular presidential nominee's hot-mic comments about women, or because of his own deepening problems stemming from the Bridgegate scandal. Such is the condition of Christie’s career. Once a GOP star, his fortunes have plummeted since the high point of his landslide re-election in 2013, and now look to be nearing rock-bottom as an aide’s trial leads to embarrassing revelations about his possible complicity in the notorious lane closures at the George Washington Bridge.

A former University of Maryland student who pleaded guilty to throwing a deadly punch outside a College Park bar was granted a new sentence earlier this month, a decision that will allow the conviction to disappear from his criminal record. Prince George’s County Judge Albert W. Northrop ordered the manslaughter conviction of Arasp Biparva in the 2014 killing of Jack Godfrey vacated. The judge also granted Biparva probation before judgment, which means the charges can later be expunged from public records. The modified sentence will help Biparva, 25, as he finds a job in accounting, according to his attorney. “Currently the conviction will interfere with the application process and prevent Mr.

"Maggie, I will find you." These are the last words out of Glenn Rhee's mouth before Negan pulverizes him (in addition to Abraham) on the season premiere of The Walking Dead. The moment isn't just heartbreaking, it's hard to watch. Glenn's already been hit twice with Lucille, Negan's barbed-wire-wrapped bat, and much like his death in the comic books, one of his eyes is hanging horrifically out of his face. His brain has clearly been damaged beyond repair, but those words still stand out. "Maggie, I will find you." Glenn doesn't say this in the comics, so why did it end up in the show? Well, actors Steven Yeun and Lauren Cohan may have given the best answer. After the episode aired, the cast

    • Why Pitt star Price plays football in cutoff shorts

No seriously, we aren’t kidding when we say this. Pittsburgh defensive lineman Ejuan Price has been known for wearing incredibly short football shorts throughout the 2016 season. Usually these football pants that players wear are supposed to fall right before the knee. But not Price’s, seen here Thursday night against Virginia Tech. Some members of the media began asking Price earlier in the season about how the short shorts started. Price said former Pitt defensive back and Cleveland Browns cornerback K'Waun Williams got him into the idea of wearing less during games. Hilariously, Price might be breaking an NCAA rule here by showing off his thighs — knee pads per NCAA rules must be half an inch
